Comments On Apr 30, 2013:Ive gotten good ones and bad ones. I have moved on to another brand because I cant trust that Im not going to get a tire thats not going to lose all the lugs on the first ride.

Comments On Apr 28, 2013:Great tire, great price, great traction, excellent life. I live in a desert environment with quite a bit of soft sand but there is also a lot of hard pack with rocks everywhere this seems to be the only tire that can stand up to this environment, it also does great on the track. I bought by first one 3 years ago and will never buy any other tire as long as I live in the desert.

Comments On Mar 03, 2013:this tire with a bridgestone heavy duty tube is the best combo. it lasts me about 3 to 4 100 mile desert scrambles with practices in between.

Comments On Mar 02, 2013:Have ran Desert IT's since 2006, awesome rear tire, I tend to like the 110 and 120 19" knob size better han the 120 18" that i have to run since i swapped to a 450x rear wheel. The 18" seems to wear faster because the knobs are a bit spikier than the 19". Never had a problem with traction with either size though. It's been my experience you have to give up alittle traction to get longevity with tires, as is the case with these. The front tire hooks up great, but there is a downside, they tend to shed side knobs with age, especially in the rocks! Still the rear is a good long lasting tire.

Comments On Feb 17, 2013:This a great tire, it seemed to last forever. Most of my riding is done in the rocky mountains WY, MT, UT. Good traction.

Comments On Feb 04, 2013:Great traction and good tread wear. Hooks up in the North Eastern California High Desert area on dirt, sand, rocks, and occasional mud. Definitely recomend these.

Comments On Dec 27, 2012:this tire is easy to change hooks up well good life

Comments On Dec 26, 2012:I like these only in the rear configuration. The front is no good. This tire lasts a really long time but is less predictable than the similar Dunlop D952 witch is my favorite. As far as this tire goes I also like how the bead sticks out and protects the rim from rock damage. All things considered I would say the Dunlop is less expensive and much better in my opinion.

Comments On Dec 20, 2012:This Maxxis tire has all of the qualities needed for running in the desert Southwest. The durable sidewall really helps elliminate pinching. The rubber compound is perfect for the loose sand and hard rocks. No chunking either. I run at 15 lbs, for higher speeds and greater resistance to flats. I have used many other brands and types. This is the best for the West. It lasts a long time, performs consistently in the heat (even at 115)and runs well in deep sand. There is no way any other tire can compare to the Desert IT out in the open desert.

Comments On Dec 13, 2012:Hard to find a rear tire that will hold up in this part of Nevada. So far the Maxxis is doing well. Haven't ripped off any of the knobs and traction is great.

Comments On Dec 04, 2012:I am now on my fourth or fifth Desert IT and will not use another rear tire. I ride desert and woods, great hook up on all terrain. I run it at 10 psi because it has such a huge sidewall but it can eat up the rear mud flap!

Comments On Nov 23, 2012:This tire wears better than any other tire I have used. Excellent traction if you don't over inflate. 13 max seems to be about perfect, traction really goes downhill at higher PSI's. I sometimes run the front at 14 psi if I am worried about flats.

Comments On Oct 31, 2012:I went threw 5 tires on my 450 before switching to this tire. Rear will last twice as long. Front will sometimes rip the side lugs off. One of the only brands in a 120/90x19 for the motocross bikes that want the benefits that a 18" wheel brings to protect from pinch flats.

Comments On Sep 20, 2012:Best all round tire I have seen. Rubber lasts and really grips nice in all terrains. Have it on two 450s.

Comments On Sep 16, 2012:I ride 70% desert both in AZ and Baja and 30% woods single track. This tire lasts! Can make an entire AMRA race season on 2 tires. Harder to put on but you can pretty much ride it flat if it ever does lose air but hasn't happened much.

Comments On Aug 24, 2012:This tire gets decent traction in a wide variety of conditions and it holds up really well! Best bang for the buck for a tire.

Comments On Aug 14, 2012:great tread pattern and wear time. doesnt throw knobs off the tire in the rocks and great traction ever where.

Comments On Jun 27, 2012:I have been running these tires for years now. They will chunk if run with low air pressures but really hook up when fresh. They make a humm noise on fast fire roads. I have run many different brands and because of cost and performance prefer these tires over the top brands.

Comments On Jun 18, 2012:This tire held up better on my CR500 than any other tire i've ever had, in rocky terrain! Didn't chunk off

Comments On Jun 02, 2012:Best tire for desert racing or just messing around in the hills hands down... this tire will just eat up anything you throw at it!! ive had this tire on for at least 6 months and it still is ripping stuff up better then some other brand new tires!! i would recomend this tire to anyone who wants a great tire that holds up amazingly!! it is extemely stiff so its a little tuff to get mounted on the rim, but its well worth it. Thanks RM!! :)

Comments On May 02, 2012:I ride in loose dirt / sand, and this tire really hooks up. Replaced my stock tire after almost a year of use, and this new one really grabs. Almost like a whole new bike

Comments On Apr 20, 2012:These work great on my 250X, very slow wear but I am also very easy on the throttle. Good grip too. Very resistant to tearing lugs off.

Comments On Mar 25, 2012:I live in the four corners area and the soil here is really hard, dry and rocky and this tire is great for here it hooks up realy good and is great in corners on my cr125. Normaly i just get a sedona because there cheap and they are complete guarbage, i have only had a few rides on this maxxis and so far its holding up great and hasnt chunked at all!!

Comments On Mar 20, 2012:This tire is the best tire i have ever put on my bike. It is extremely tuff and long lasting. Guys i have road with have been using these for years. It is the best trail tire out there.

Comments On Mar 14, 2012:This tire is in the top 3 for Desert and Baja use, regardless of price. Get it balanced after installation to smooth out its high speed character. Good heavy sidewall lets you run pressure below 15 psi and will really take a beating - sharp rocks, stickery plants, etc. Never had a tire carcass failure in several thousand miles of Baja with this tire. Wears at least as well as other tires compounded for hard terrain. Shallow rounded profile works very well in general off road/desert uses. If you are a hot shoe on fire roads and like to play dirt tracker, then look for another tire with a taller round profile. This one is meant for small lean angles to keep weight over the bike. Replace when blocks wear to the 1/2 way point and you will always be pleased with the traction and durability.

Comments On Mar 07, 2012:This tire is AWESOME!! Difficult to put on, but eats up any terrain you can throw at it. I am hooked.

Comments On Feb 29, 2012:If you ride rocky/hard terrain, these tires will hold up much better than most other tire types. Top 3 tire choice for riding in Nevada/California mountains.

Comments On Feb 21, 2012:I will buy this tire again. It has decent traction and lasts way longer than any other non-hard terrain tire I have ever used. I run the tubliss system also and this tire has a very tough carcass which helps reduce puncture flats from sharp rocks etc.

Comments On Feb 13, 2012:I have used this tire for about 3 years now and love it. Occationally I will try a different tire but have always come back to the Maxxis
Was this review helpful?
Comments On Feb 10, 2012:I have used these for years because of their durability. A little harder to install because of the stiff sidewall though.

Comments On Jan 03, 2012:Riding in Mojave i notice more tearing of knobs and loss of traction when tire is half gone compared to Dunlop 739at. great tire for the price. 01 cr500

Comments On Dec 29, 2011:Tire wears well. I ride lots of SoCal single track, with plenty of rocks and the Desert IT outlasts any other tires I have tried with minimal knob chunking. It has decent grip in most situations from rocks to fast trails and desert.Plus, Rocky Mountain has great prices on this tire.

Comments On Dec 29, 2011:Running on a KTM 300 XC-W. 10-12 psi. B class rider in Hare Scrambles(Southeast terrain). PROs : VERY durable sidewall, knobs holding up well after a full season. Some rounding of center knobs but no chunking and very few cuts. Fairly tall knobs for digging in. CONS : Heavy & difficult to mount (due to durability), Not very good traction in anything wet. Cornering not the greatest due to roundness of tire and lack of aggressive side knobs.
I bought this tire as a "Summer tire (dry and hard pack)" and is has been EXCELLENT for that. The tire has held up so well I've run it in the fall season and the wet conditions really show the tire's limitations. The tire seems to be so tough, I'll lower the psi (8-9) and see how that does.

Comments On Dec 21, 2011:This tire is nasty. I love it. I ride a ton of trails with sharp shale type rock and every other tire I've had is missing knobs after one ride. I rode this tire for a full year on my 450 and it still has plenty meat.

Comments On Dec 01, 2011:I am completely satisfied with this tire. It's durable, lasts a long time, and is a beast on the trails!

Comments On Nov 14, 2011:I love this tire. It seems to have more knobbies than the other desert tires I have used before & I def get longer life out of them. The sidewall is a little stiffer so it's a little more difficult to change but well worth it in my opinion.

Comments On Nov 01, 2011:Still in good shape after 2 2hour desert races with volcanic rock that usually chews the crap out of other tires. Hooks up well in all but slimy trails. To bad Maxxis raised their prices but I'll buy again and again.

Comments On Oct 18, 2011:Put a set (F&R) for a week long desert event. Expected the front to last but maybe not the rear. When they arrived I was suspicious about the front ? felt very lightweight in the carcase compared to what I?d prev used on this sort of ride. the rear felt as solid and firm as a desert knobby should (ie, similar to Dunlop 739). Both gave fine grip and feel but on day 4 on a rock section, ripped a hole in the front tyre which required replacement. rear lasted (just) till the end.

Comments On Oct 20, 2011:I am very pleased with this as a rear tire on a KTMexc. I am basically torn between this and the Dunlop D952 as the "best" value rear tire. I usually order whichever one seems to be cheaper a the time, but can't go wrong with either. I do think the Maxxis has a stiffer carcas.

Comments On Oct 10, 2011:Great tire! Lasts about a half year on my KX 450F. Desert riding/mountains/mx works good everywhere. Leave out in sun or by a heater for about 1 hour before install. PIA to get on thank god for tire stand. Also you can use a knobby knife to squeeze more life out of the tire.

Comments On Sep 26, 2011:This tire gets really good traction but it chunks easily on nasty rocks.

Comments On Sep 18, 2011:This tire is no match for the Nevada Dessert. 160 miles on my 525 and this tire is trashed.

Comments On Aug 25, 2011:I went from a d739 to this tire.. it hooks up GREAT in the sand and hard pack with its deep stiff knob design. It definitely feels like a desert tire also. Install was a little hard but pairing it with a heavy duty tube i feel i won't have to worry about flats anymore due to the thickness of tire/tube combo
I put this tire through 80 miles of hell so far and theres NO sign of any wear. Going to replace my d739 rear with a maxxis also and im confident it will outlast the dunlop and hook up just as good just like the front. Price is EXCELLENT also.

Comments On Aug 09, 2011:Whether its drifting a turn in a fire road, hitting a loose long hill climb, blasting a mud hole or dodging trees on the tight singletrack we have here on the Olympic Penninsula this tire does it well. It is lasting longer on my Berg 450 than any thing else I've tried. Buying another one soon.

Comments On Aug 06, 2011:I have used this tire on many different bikes and riding conditions. Hard to beat for offroad performance. Can seem heavy if you are used to keeping your bike as light as possible but everything comes with a price. This tire seems to last quite awhile and has incredible traction on just about everything but mossy, slimy river logs. Find me a tire that does that and I will be looking for a snorkel kit.

Comments On Jul 21, 2011:I've purchased a 18 and 19 inch rear tyre for both my enduro and motocross bikes and they have not let me down yet, they hold their traction very well in the dry and muddy conditions, they also hold up well against the toughest of sharp rocky hills

Comments On Jul 11, 2011:This is mounted on a XR600r notorious for tearing up knobbies and so far no chunking and no problems. the tire hooks up well in all terrain I am very pleased with this tire.

Comments On Jun 16, 2011:Love how this tire performs in west mountain desert Utah conditions. Also has worked very nicely as a dune tire believe it or not as long. I am super happy with this tire on the rear on my 07 CRF450R and will definitely buy another when this one goes to bed.

Comments On Jun 08, 2011:This tire works good in all different types of soil, from rocks to loose dirt. I installed it 5 races ago and seems to have minimum so far.

Comments On Nov 20, 2010:I use this tire in the woods (2006 YZ250 two stroke)and it works great. I had used the regular IT and loved it. A buddy had one (desert IT)and the knobs on it are so much taller then the regular IT. I though I might get more miles out of it and I was right. This tire holds on great in the mud when trying to hold a line on a slick side hill. Knobs tearing at all have not been an issue. This is the only tire that I can get a full year out of. It will outlast other tires easy two to one. This tire is a little heavy. It would have to be with knobs being twice as tall. Don't let the word desert stop you it works great in the woods.
Additional Comments On May 21, 2011:I'm thinking I'm done buying this tire. The newer ones don't last like they used to. Appears there might be a a compound issue. My buddy had the same problem with it not lasting like they used to. Oh, and the price went up by over $10.00 in less then three months. Maxxis you are taking your customers for granted! NO WAY I can get a year out of this tire now.

Comments On May 22, 2011:Northern Nevada. Rocks, sand, more rocks. Long life, excellent traction in all conditions. 120/100X18 fits on a XR650R perfectly. Tried everything else, nothing comes close. Spray your friends in the face, they will think you are cool.

Comments On May 21, 2011:Good Tires, hook up good in the soft loose sand out here and transitions well between the hard pack and soft stuff easy enough and isn't as squirrely as my previous brand of tires.

Comments On Mar 11, 2011:Great tread design and works great in the rocks and the loose sandy stuff. Maxxis makes great stuff and this tire is awesome for the price.

Comments On Mar 12, 2011:I've heard that the sidewall on these tires is too stiff; I disagree. Excellent tire! Of course, having new rubber on the front always makes for a great turning machine, but I really like this tire a lot. Will absolutely purchase the desert IT again!

Comments On Feb 25, 2011:great life in the desert on these things.

Comments On Feb 02, 2011:These are the real deal. I ride a bored out yzf 450 and I usually shred tires right away. I ride desert and tons of mountains. The combo of hard trails, rocks and twigs usually eat most right away. The maxis outlasts them all. You can run flat if needed however I've never gotten a flat!!! I'm on my forth tire. Would buy a different one

Comments On Jan 27, 2011:Excellent tire. It will Last a full year and I ride the rocks much more than most. This tire also has the stiffest sidewalls on the market, which means fewer flats on high speed rocky roads. I won't do a desert race on anything else.

Comments On Dec 17, 2010:Tire Hooks up awesome on the tracks and trails I ride in southern Utah and Salt Lake areas. Desert, trails, a little loose feeling in the sand, but thats what a paddle is for right? Wear still looks great, very satisfied with the purchase.

Comments On Nov 20, 2010:There is no other desert or rough terrain tire that has the performance for price like the Desert IT. $60 are you kidding me? That is a steal. Yes you can buy a Dunlop desert tire but you will pay $20 to $30 more for the Dunlop name.
The Maxxis will last on big bore thumpers. I use it on my XR650R to great results and will be replacing the world's worst tire (dual sport or not), Dunlop 606 on my new CRF450X with a Desert IT soon. The front IT's are just as good and will handle all manner of terrain. I rode the last 12 miles of my last desert race on a flat front Maxxis Desert IT and it didn't damage the tire. I was able to put a new tube in, air it up and the tire is still running strong.
Granted these tires won't do very well on motorcross (pansy riding areas) or loamy tracks (where cry babies roam). They are made to last in the roughest of conditions where only real men ride and race, the desert.

Comments On Nov 04, 2010:This is a very long lasting, good traction tire. Front is ideal for sand, loose soil and even some rock. The rear tire holds up twice as long as others in the desert, I also like the stiff sidewall, in case you flat, you can still limp back to the truck. I recommend this tire, but really shines on use with big thumpers (450 on up) that tend to tear and shred tires due to torque and horsepower. Only down side...if there is one is that the tire can be a little trickier to mount when it is cold out due to the stiff sidewall.

Comments On Oct 12, 2010:Best tire that you will ever use. I do alot of Arizona desert riding, from rocks too sandy washes. The Desert IT will always shine in any condition that I'm in, the tire really does great in sandy conditions. Best investment that I've made.

Comments On Sep 20, 2010:This tire is great for the desert and also great for riding single track and and mountain trails. I run about 14 PSI with extra heavy duty tires. I ride dual sport and usually get about 1000 miles on the rar and 2000 miles from the tire on the front.

Comments On Sep 17, 2010:I live in central Mexico in the high desert sub tropical climate in the state of Guanajuato, where you can find yourself in a motorcycle off road riders heaven. I have been using the Maxxiss Cross Desert tire and they rock! Speaking of rocks, witch is most of the terrain around these parts, has had the best all round results over every other tire I have used. Best Mid Terrain tires in my opinion.
Keep them Rockin' Maxxiss!

Comments On Aug 23, 2010:I installed this tire on my WR 450 300 miles ago. It doesn't even looked used. The tire wears great, the traction is where I don't like it as much. It slides into corners more then I like. I have adjusted my riding to the tires but they are not my favorite in the traction department. I have mainly been riding on single track trails so they might work better in the sand or actual desert type riding. Great tire for the price lasts forever.

Comments On Jul 04, 2010:This is a good all-around tire, not just for desert riding. Great traction, long life and is more or less the same tire as the MaxxCross IT tire. Great product.

Comments On Jun 16, 2010:This tire holds up very well to the harsh Utah desert. Running one on a KX 250 and one on a YZ 250 and they both look great after many miles/hours of abuse.

Comments On Jun 16, 2010:this tire was my favorit one so far. i live in rhode island and i ride all over newengland if u dont know we have the rockiest and roughest teraine around from hard to soft the variety within 1 mile of a trail varies so much and this tire has held up through every thing!! also this tire is on its 16th ride and its still going strong.

Comments On May 28, 2009:I use this tire on the back of my KTM 525 in Northeastern Washington state. It hooks up well, predictable slide and wears like iron. It's my second favorite next to a D756 but this will outlast the 756 by quite a bit. Conditions are mostly dry and rocky, compact to loose dirt, gravel and whetever else you'd normally find in the mountains and this tire handles it all well. My buddies are so impressed, they're putting these on next.
Additional Comments On Jun 03, 2010:Still love this tire. Buying another one right now. Cheap, wears great, predictable, resists chunking. Really, really good tire.

Comments On May 24, 2010:my brother bought this tire and loved it on his '00 yz250f i put it on my 125yz and went to a place that normaly takes nobs off my tire i check the tire and only had small slices on some of the nobs ive taken this tire up sick rock loose rock muddy snow and dry hills and cross the desert best tire i've ever owned. i dont like to spend money on somthing thats not worth it and i'll be buying this tire over and over again ive had it for almost a year and its still has not rounded. you really could take this tire across the desert and not have a problem =D

Comments On Apr 10, 2010:No better desert tire for the money! I use to be a hardline Dunlop 695/739 desert advocate. Those are still excellent tires, but this Maxxis give me better grip, substantially longer life, doesn't chunk even under the extreem torqe of my preped 650R, and provide almost as good feel and predictibility (once I found the right pressure to run).
I tryed one and never even thought of looking back. I buy no other tire as lone as they keep the quality the same and don't raise the price in relation to the other options.
I highly recommend!!

Comments On Mar 29, 2010:I've tried a lot of tires over the years, and this is one of the very best off-road tires made. It is very tough, durable and lays down excellent traction across terrain conditions. There are a few tires that get slightly better drive traction, and almost none that get as good of cornering stick. Its only competition is the Bridstone ED78 (little more drive, little less sticky in corners). The Bridgstone 402 was stickier than both, but is no longer available.

Comments On Feb 12, 2010:WOW, these tires turned my cr250 into a tractor! the knobs are super tall, and the tread is reversible so i think these babies will last forever. ive only ridden in frozen dirt, snow, and deep mud thus far and it gets crazy traction, almost too much with the 120 width. Ill go with the 110 next time for my cr250 and wouldnt suggest the 120 unless you have a big 450+ thumper. will definately buy again!!

Comments On Feb 01, 2010:I ordered the 120-90-19. Don't have the money for an 18 inch wheel, so this oversized tire did great with my 19" against pinch flats. In fact, i never got a flat on this tire. Only issue is that near the end of the tires life, it deteriorated quickly. Lasted a long time, but lost lugs quickly when it was on its last leg. Will buy/ have bought again.

Comments On Sep 05, 2009:I ride in mostly southern vermont, a lot of nasty rocks, roots, and mud with plenty of dirt road. These tires work very well in all conditions. I have over 400 miles on them and none of my knobs are falling off as some people are saying.

Comments On Aug 24, 2009:Great rear tire for the desert and rocky conditions. I chunked the front tire up really, really bad on the outside treads. Almost all of them chunked off after a few hundred miles of desert riding. I like to run 13 to 14psi in front. Maybe if I ran 16 in front it would not have chunked but I dont like that much pressure. Makes me feel like I am riding on marbles. I would go with the rear Desert IT but not the front.
