I'm a big guy. Finding gear that fits is usually difficult. The XXL fit similar in size to what Hanes underwear does. Good padding while not being too bulky. Even the crotch padding is ok. It definitely helps with the lumber hard KTM seat.

So, these are really nice shorts. I wear them under my riding pants, and they are comfortable. They afford the little bit of extra protection I was looking for. I wear a 36" waste pant, and I bought these in a size large. The interesting thing about my choice to go down A size is, the waist size is smaller in these shorts, but where your butt goes is bigger than you would think. Ultimately if you wear the same size pants as me, get the large.

I bought these for some additional tail bone padding. I broke my tailbone several years ago and it can get very sore on rides. The protection with these shorts helps a lot and it's placed such that it doesn't feel like you are wearing a diaper. I could use a bit more padding but it's a happy medium. The hip pads and compression fit are just a plus.

Great mid-layer for those not wanting to spend a bunch on some extra insulation. Very comfortable to wear on and off the bike - even when just lounging around the house or camp site.

Nice light weight base layer. MSR is making nice quality gear. I've bought several MSR products recently and am very pleased with performance and price.

For reference, I wear a size 30-31 waist pants (5'10", 170 lbs. with athletic proportion thighs) and found the size small Alpinestar Bionic Pro shorts to fit great. They do fit like a compression short, similar to cycling shorts with the exception that the frontal genital area is more roomy than typical cycling shorts, so it offers more comfort and ventilation on long rides. I found very few shorts offer upper pelvis bone the side hip bone protection, let a lone in the right area (these areas are prone to impact, abrasion and can be very painful). Unlike any other shorts I have seen, this short has an articulating pad around the femur/hip joint which "pivots" when you sit/stand, whereas other shorts bunch together when you sit. Very clever design. I am a big fan of Leatt gear, but found this short to offer slightly better placed protection and better ventilation than Leatt's top level shorts by a margin. Good protection can be the difference of taking a hit and then continuing to ride, versus linking home early.
