Dual sport tire for mainly off road use

Comments On Apr 09, 2015:On big heavier dual sport bikes, we struggle to find a front tire that wears well and still performs well off road. Having tried the Dunlop 606 as well as the Pirelli MT-21, the 486 Hard Terrain is dramatically better in off road performance. I found that the other DS tires lasted, but they were a very hard compound with a stiff sidewall and low profile. The Dunlop and the MT-21 were terrible on loose rocks because they never seemed to flex properly at the pressures necessary not to pinch flat. The 486 is available in the larger 90-100-21 so it has more meat to absorb sharp edges, while still flexing well in loose rocks. I would have been happy if it performed well but wore out fast. But, after 1100 miles of mixed conditions and a fair amount street riding, you can still see the cut-outs on the outer face of the center knobs. I highly recommend this tire for aggressive off road and dual sport riding.

2006 KTM 450 EXC Dual Sport

Comments On Jun 10, 2013:I took my first ride with this tire yesterday, 110 miles of mixed terrain from pavement to saturated bottomless clay/mud. This tire worked great on all surfaces. It had a slower turn-in on pavement than I am used to for knobbies but it handled well and was very smooth with no tendency to "fall over" in the corners. Offroad it hooked up well and I could push it fairly hard, even in soft mud/top soil. It also has good braking traction in the dirt, my riding partner stopped suddenly and I bottomed out the forks and the tire just barely slid.
For a "hard terrain" tire it worked well in soft conditions, arguably better than my Bridgestone M403 that I just took off, far better all around than my previous Michelin AC-10, and as good or better than the now discontinued Kenda 776F.
I highly recommend this tire for anyone that runs in varied terrain. It is too early to tell how long it will last but I am impressed so far.

GREAT for the designed soil

Comments On Jul 11, 2011:I put the mxmh rear on my '10 YZ250f replacing the stock B-stone 404. Just like the title says this tire is fantastic in harder than average dirt. I only ride MX and our tracks in the midwest are usually soft in the mornings and develope hard places later in the day. In pure soft loamy dirt (perfect soil) they are just ok-not as good as a 756 but when the corners are harder or even rock hard flat corners this tire REALLY performs. Even hardpack with loose dirt on top doesnt give this tire much trouble. I have been super impressed with the durability, i have 12 hours on it and the knobs are still fairly sharp.
My opinion: For MX its better than a B-stone 404 all around and wears slightly better, not as good as a 756 on a perfect groomed track but better than a 756 when the conditions are a little harder/slicker. I would purchase this tire again no doubt if i could take 2 tire setups with me to the race (a 756 would be the other). But im still looking for that 1 do-it-all tire if there is such a thing (maybe I will try out the MX51 next)
