Offroad & Motocross Tire Guide

Michelin Star Cross 5

RM YouTube Channel

Details

The Michelin StarCross 5 tires were designed based on feedback from riders of all levels, from amateurs to world champions, often riding in extreme conditions, who shared their experiences in the field with Michelin Motorsports and Michelin’s world-class research and development team. The Michelin StarCross 5 range breaks new ground for Michelin in the world of Off-Road/Motocross tires. Compared to its predecessors (Michelin StarCross 3/4), the Michelin StarCross 5 line is based on a casing design that delivers several significant performance improvements.
  • The Michelin StarCross 5 Soft rear tire features "Mud-Phobic Bars", which also enhance tire cleaning to prevent soil from building up and reducing traction.
  • The casing design incorporates stronger, higher density materials that reduce weight up to 15 percent without compromising strength or durability. The casing construction also features Michelin’s Comfort Casing Technology (CCT), which provides exceptional shock absorption that reduces rider fatigue.
  • The casing design has been engineered to optimize the size of the tire’s contact patch. Combined with aggressive front and rear tread patterns, specially designed for each tire in the range, this construction offers maximum levels of grip for precise steering and traction, even in the most difficult conditions.
  • Tread designs for the Michelin StarCross 5 range of tires improve performance across a multitude of applications. The intermediate and side tread blocks ensure good steering response from the front tire and traction from the rear. The central blocks are designed specifically to enhance braking performance and traction on all types of riding surfaces.
  • The Michelin StarCross 5 line sports a self-cleaning tread design to help release soil from the tire. The design includes revolutionary fine horizontal tread lines to release soil and enhance traction in a range of different soil conditions.

STARCROSS soft
Front tire amazing. Rear tire seems very comparable to MX3s... I did notice the width of the star cross is about 1/4 -1/2 inch narrower than the mx32 at the edge nobby width.

These tires flat hook up , only about fifty miles of single track trails on them so far and am very satisfied. Trail conditions were steep , muddy and up to three in of snow in places , dug down and kept on climbing! Not sure on tread life , so no comment on that , but for a late fall, winter I’ll buy every year

This is my third set of Starcross 5’s soft terrain tires. They work great on all surfaces that I ride, from sandy loamy soil to red clay. My choice for my vintage mx bikes.

Great tire for New England woods riding
This is the best all around soft terrain tire I have used yet. Good in mud, but not as good as the IRC M5B. Good over rocks but not as good as an AT81, very similar to an S12 but better handling.

This tire will climb a slippery hill, rip around a grass track, and handles roots very well, and tread life is also good.

I am running in a Sprint Enduro series and this tire is the best all around by far.

michelin tires
I have been using the Michelin s12 front tires for years. now I'm using the star cross 5 soft terrain in the front. I ride everything from rocks and mud, sand to hard pack. they steer great, bite in all conditions on my newer KTM'S and my vintage pentons. 2 strokes only in my garage

How is the front tire on roots? Any chunking?
David S on Feb 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I've been running this tire since it come out and replaced the s12 . So far it hooks great everywhere here in the hills of WV . No chunking that I've seen. The only thing I kinda don't like it wants to climb out of ruts but I can deal with that since it stays put everywhere else. Wears good also.
Does this tire work with tubeless systems?
John C on Nov 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I've been using these for 2 years with the Nuetech Tubliss setup & sealant and never had any problems.

What is the difference between the s12 and the ms5 front tires? I've ran the s12 for years. Great great tire. Was thinking about trying the ms5.
LUCAS G on Jul 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The tread patterns are nearly identical. The difference being, the ms5 is made with a softer compound. It grips much better than the s12 on wet logs and roots, slick rock and hardpack but It does wear a little faster.
IMO the s12 is good but ms5 is much better.
