The Eagle Mfg. idle-shaft lever and spring replaces the "weak" stock unit that often fails on KLR 650 motorcycles. KLR650’s have been known to have problems with the stock idle lever ("doohickey") needed to keep tension on the balancer chain. There are weaknesses with both the stock spring and the stock idle lever. Failure of either part can destroy the engine. The Eagle Mfg. Doohickey solves this problem with a better design and by being made with stronger materials.

    • The Eagle Mfg. idle-shaft lever and spring replaces the "weak" stock unit.
    • One-piece-design lever is Machined from 17-4PH hardened, stainless-steel to be incredibly strong.
    • Includes stainless steel idle lever (doohickey) and two differing length coil springs (to fit all KLR650 years)

All KLR owners should upgrade their doohickey.
I have always installed this on my KLRs. My '08 has over 177k miles on the same Eagle Mike doohickey and torsion spring. Far better product than stock.

    Doohickey
I installed the part just because I read too much about it being an issue. My stock springs did not have much tension left in them, so I guess I made the right call replacing the part. New part fit good and does appear better made than the stock unit.

It works great! I had a certified mechanic install it, and he was sceptical. He talk to other local mechanics, and they have never heard of the part failing. When he took it apart the stock spring had no tension. The bike was getting harder to start, and I started getting alot of noise where the part is located. It's a 2016. It only has 2,600 miles on it. He replaced the Doohickey and put on the torsion spring. The bike starts easier and there's no noise. It's a Must Have......

If you own a KLR650 DO THIS
Definite part that needs to be replaced. Eagle Mike quality is exceptional, and once you compare stock to this its a no brainer

Every klr owner should upgrade if you've seen the horror stories online. It is much more robust than the stock one.

Have a KLR, do the Doo
Go from a thin poorly welded part to the Eagle Mike upgrade, I'm glad I took the time to replace the stock parts just over 13,000 on the odometer. I also opted for the Torsion Spring.

A must have for the KLR650
I did not pick the spring, as it was recommended to use a torsion spring, which I did. Easy to do if you are tech savvy. My 09 had a better doohickey than I expected, and believe it was an aftermarket, but, this new one gives better adjustment range.

    Wow
A much better quality than the stock part. The bonus is that the bike runs much quieter.

Is the failing idle shaft and spring still an issue on newer KRL models, such as the 2014.5?
    Brandon L on Mar 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The new (2008+) doohickey is pretty solid and a big improvement , however the standard spring is what gets stretched loose and could cause failure.
Most that install the Eagle kit use the optional torsion spring.
Dont forget to also order both gaskets if you're doing the install!
