The Gaerne Balance Oiled Boots are a unique footwear option that blurs lines and breaks barriers by taking a trials boot and molding it into a waterproof design that handles most kinds of riding from light dual-sporting to extended touring. And it does it with nearly zero break-in time, a super tacky sole, and craftsmanship that’s a step above most other boots.

The boot starts with a full-grain oiled leather body on top of a rubber gum sole that mimics the excellent traction of a trials boot. Between the outer leather and the interior comfort padding is the Gaerne Drytech membrane that delivers full waterproofing. The TPU shin protection is also there, providing good frontal protection. The boots wraps up using attractive leather straps and durable alloy buckles to give you a very positive, very secure feel in the boot.

While it may not be as protective as some other off road boot options, the Balance Oiled Boot manages to have excellent quality, waterproofing, comfort, and style. This makes it ideal for riders that want a comfortable light-duty off-road boot, a long-distance adventure touring boot, or an on-road boot with an appealing look that blends adventure and trials.

    Specs:
  • Gaerne Drytech waterproof and breathable membrane
  • Drytech membrane sheds water but allows interior moisture to escape
  • Waterproof membrane extends up to velcro closure
  • Gum rubber sole gives excellent grip for superior control on the pegs
  • Sole has enduro/trials type lugs for excellent traction on slick surfaces
  • Full grain oiled leather construction
  • Quality leather gives a classic appearance while aiding waterproofing
  • Hybrid style combines trials and adventures footwear traits
  • Injection molded TPU frontal shin guard
  • Triple alloy buckle closure system
  • Extensive use of double stitching around entire boot
  • Elasticated gaiter prevents moisture and debris from entering boot
  • Accordion movement panels at front and rear of ankle
  • Comfortable out of the box with very little to no break-in time

Worth it
I haven't been able to really try them out on a ride. I crashed a couple weeks ago and broke some ribs. They seem to fit really well though

Balance Oiled
These are the most comfortable boots on planet Earth! I have been wearing my first pair for several years now, and they are holding up well. I'll probably re-sole them with a regular MX Gaerne sole in the near future because my kickstarter is poking up through the bottom when I start. These boots offer the absolute best feel for shifting and braking. If you are prone to accidents, or getting your legs/feet banged up, then you'll probably want to look at a more protective boot. These don't offer as much protection as an MX boot, but offer enhanced shifting and brake feel, which does contribute to safety, just not in the form of body armor. These boots are just leather with a shin guard. Be that as it is, I am certain that the benefit of excellent feel on the shifter and brake has saved me from a few wipeouts that would have been bad if I wasn't wearing a more protective boot. These boots are great for walking and hiking while out riding. I just got some SG-12's, and am trying to ween myself off of the excellent feel of the Balance in trade for the protection of an MX boot. For rides where I spend a lot of time with a machete and a pruning saw, I'll be wearing the Balance Oiled boots.

Ordered the Forma Adventure Boot after the second failure of my Gaerne Balance boot. One Balance had a buckle failure and I fixed it. The second pair the soles on both boots came unglued. I was trail riding and noticed it flapping and later it fell off completely. Inspecting the other boot it also was in the process of coming apart at the sole.

Great boot, not really for MX use
The Garne Balance boot is terrific. Out of the box they're super comfortable. They're warm due to their waterproof nature. The gum sole sticks to just about anything. The other day I had them on for 12 hours after some moderate trail riding, slab riding, and hanging around in camp. My feet were never sore. True all-day boots.

The only down side is the ankle protection is light. I woudln't recommend these for anything but light trail use. I bought them for trail use but kept them to be my daily commuting boots because they feel so great. Note the ankle protection is better than your standard non-racing street boot.

These boots are flexible so you can expect fairly easy shifting and easy walking.

Dual sport Riding
Very comfortable. dualsport, trails, these rock. soles seemed soft but they're holding up well with 100+ hrs of use, no big chuncks missing from the pegs eating them which i was initially worried about. Would recommend!

Hike 7 plus miles in a pair of off road boots?
YES! An very comfortable boot with a sturdy sole with just the right balance of stiffness and flexibility to be able to hke a 7 plus mile rocky trail as well as a pare of boots you are not dying to take off after a long day of riding.

Recommend use: Light dual sport and sport touring. I won't go back to regular sport touring boots as the protection and comfort can't be beat and the boot/sole are not so thick as to impede fine control of the shift lever.

Down Side: Water proof...well not as good as cortex but does work. I've used mink oil on the leather and seams and can walk through water and ride in sustained rain with out getting wet. I have a small cafe and pull the buckles to close to their shortest setting. When doing so, it stresses the buckle it self. I've broken two of them in the past and garne sent me new ones. I keep one in my jacket on trips just in case.

Are these designed to go over or under pants?
David L on Aug 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I wear boot cut jeans over the boots when dual sport riding and while I do use these boots at the track, I switch to Thor Pulse pants that tuck inside. You can get straight leg jeans to tuck in, but they are tight. Regardless, this is a great in between boot that works great on and off road. Not as stout as a pure moto boot, but much more comfortable. Sincerely B.T. You meet the nicest people on a Honda!
