If you ride a large dual sport rally-type motorcycle and need a tire that can handle capably through the desert and other off-road terrains as well as pavement, the Dunlop D908 Rally Raid Enduro Tire is an excellent option. It has enough grit to handle the power of large-displacement bikes and can tackle rough environments such as those present in rally raids and other cross-country races. And since it is DOT Compliant, it works great for adventure or dual sport bikes that also ride on the street.

The Dunlop D908RR features a tread pattern with deep lugs that give it great grip in the dirt. It can manage in numerous types of terrains. For example, the open space on the shoulders help it perform well in softer terrains like sand. The casing construction is heavy duty, allowing it to take abuse without failure. This is one of the reasons why the tire does so well in cross-country situations and performs great on heavier machines. The tire also does well on pavement. Air pressures can be adjusted depending on whether you’re off-road or on the street to maximize traction and tire longevity.

One of the features that creates fans of the Dunlop D908 is how well it wears. While riding style and habits will dictate the exact tire lifespan, the D908 has been known to last longer than other dual sport knobby tires – much longer. This makes it an excellent choice for long rides through harsh terrain.

    Specs:
  • The Dunlop D908RR is designed for the speed, horsepower and weight of large-displacement rally-type dual-sport machines. (The RR in D908RR stands for rally raid.)
  • Tire is DOT Compliant for street-legal use.
  • Reinforced tread blocks yield enhanced traction and stability.
  • Generous open space around the shoulder area helps optimize traction in sand and mud.
  • Heavy-duty casing makes for excellent bump absorption and allows lower air pressures for a larger footprint and increased traction.

Not a good tire for the money
Bought this tire based off the reviews posted here. the 908 make my 2013 XR650L wobble at anything over 55mph on pavement. In the dirt it skates around.

search avrider for: Dunlop Rally Raid-908's Front and Rear.

my experience with the 908 front matches the reviews there.

Good in the dirt, so so on the pavement.
The tire works well in the dirt, wears good on the large KTM's.
Just be careful when the tire is new especially on the asphalt, it's a little sketchy.

Great rear tire
For hard and fast off-roading on a KTM 950 Super Enduro, I can't think of a better tire. It is THE tire designed to translate all that power to the rear wheel in sand/mud/gravel on such a heavy dirt bike. Its stiff sidewalls allow for slow travel when flat (not recommended but may be necessary in some situations for short durations). When on pavement it really pays to inflate to over 30 PSI or it will heat up and wear fast. Life of this tire greatly depends on the riding style. I normally get between 400 and 800 miles out of one, but can imagine that a very conservative rider may get up to 2000 miles from it.

Front version of this tire can be very scary on the pavement as it tends to send a bike into tank slapper at high speed. So be forewarned. Otherwise the front tire is great.

Excellent at low pressure with Tubliss
I purchased this tire on the recommendation of Jeff at Nuetech (manufacturer of the Tubliss system). I had previously tried a Dunlop MX32 for my southern Nevada desert riding, but found that it is not well-suited to the rocky desert environment (ripped a hole in the tire pretty quickly). Jeff suggested the D908, and I was skeptical since it is a DOT legal tire..... but, at 5-6psi as he recommended, it has been outstanding in the desert and has been EXTREMELY durable with great traction. I first ran it at 9-10psi and was not impressed with the traction, but upon lowering it to 5-6psi it has been great.

The Best
This tire is amazing. It holds up on the pavement and has great grip in the dirt. If you are going to run hard on the highway and still want to thrash in the dirt this is the tire.

Bombproof long lasting tire
Update from a previous review.

I raced the Desert 100 yesterday running this tire. Finished 4th in the 200 class. The conditions were brutal, dusty with lots of rocks, slammed a lot riding blind at times. This tire held up well, it still looked new at the end of the race! It's the same tire I mounted up 6 months ago. Again it deflects a little more than a soft tire but I believe the trade off is worth it.

I ran it with 6 psi using the Tubless system.

Bombproof tire
I started running this tire with the Tubless system about six months ago.

I wanted a tire that was extremely puncture resistant. Last year at the Desert 100 race I got a hole in my Pirelli and got a flat. I finished because it was near the end of the race and the Tubless kept the tire locked on the rim. The Desert 100 is hard on tires.

I knew this tire would be stiff because it's designed for heavy dual sport bikes, not a light KTM 200. It's crazy stiff! Best results are running very low psi, around 2-3. It's wearing very well, has actually softened up with use. It does deflect more off of rocks and roots than my soft Pirelli did.

Bottom line, this tire is bombproof and wears very well. I have hammered this tire hard and nothing fazes it. It's a bit of a compromise but for me it's worth it to avoid a DNF.

Toughest Tire Ever Made
I have been running Tubliss front and rear for about 5 years and was constantly getting punctured tires on my front for the first two years. Then I tried the Dunlop 908. My punctures went down from about 6 a year to about one every other year. I have run this tire ever since and don't have any plans to switch because of the toughness. I run the pressure at about 4-5 psi and the traction is good, not great, but good enough and I NEVER worry about getting a flat when charging hard through rocky sections etc.

Love 'em / Hate 'em
I have a love / hate relationship with this (front) tire. Without a doubt this is the best offroad tire for a big ADV bike, but on the road it's horrible. At higher PSI the tire felt very unsettled and wanted to follow every crack in the road. At lower PSI it's better, but low PSI, highway speeds and long distances are a bad combo.
