The Eagle Mfg. idle-shaft lever and spring replaces the "weak" stock unit that often fails on KLR 650 motorcycles. KLR650’s have been known to have problems with the stock idle lever ("doohickey") needed to keep tension on the balancer chain. There are weaknesses with both the stock spring and the stock idle lever. Failure of either part can destroy the engine. The Eagle Mfg. Doohickey solves this problem with a better design and by being made with stronger materials.
  • KLR650’s have been known to have problems with the stock idle lever ("doohickey") needed to keep tension on the balancer chain. Failure of this part can destroy the engine.
  • The Eagle Mfg. idle-shaft lever and spring replaces the "weak" stock unit.
  • One-piece-design lever is Machined from 17-4PH hardened, stainless-steel to be incredibly strong.
  • Includes stainless steel idle lever (doohickey) and two differing length coil springs (to fit all KLR650 years)

The most important upgrade for a KLR
After reading all the harry stories about the OEM doohickey, I thought it best to upgrade to the eagle mike kit. Now I can rest easy knowing I have done it.

Glad I got this
When I got my bike, it had less than 8,000 miles on it. That winter I opened it up to look at the doohickey. Coil bound and basically non-functional. I installed the Eagle Mfg. Doohickey - Balancer Idle Lever & Spring Upgrade and have had no issues in over 5 years.

Great buy
Obviously an important upgrade for the KLR, although you'd better factor in the price of the tools too along with this purchase!

Doohickey
A should do upgrade.
Changed my 2014 with 17,000 miles. No broken parts, but
tensioner spring was at the end of adjustment.

All KLR owners should upgrade their doohickey.
I have always installed this on my KLRs. My '08 has over 177k miles on the same Eagle Mike doohickey and torsion spring. Far better product than stock.

Doohickey
I installed the part just because I read too much about it being an issue. My stock springs did not have much tension left in them, so I guess I made the right call replacing the part. New part fit good and does appear better made than the stock unit.

It works great! I had a certified mechanic install it, and he was sceptical. He talk to other local mechanics, and they have never heard of the part failing. When he took it apart the stock spring had no tension. The bike was getting harder to start, and I started getting alot of noise where the part is located. It's a 2016. It only has 2,600 miles on it. He replaced the Doohickey and put on the torsion spring. The bike starts easier and there's no noise. It's a Must Have......

If you own a KLR650 DO THIS
Definite part that needs to be replaced. Eagle Mike quality is exceptional, and once you compare stock to this its a no brainer

Does Rocky mountain supply the rotor bolt for this upgrade?
Scott D on Jun 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No but they will sell you one 👍🏼
Is the failing idle shaft and spring still an issue on newer KRL models, such as the 2014.5?
Brandon L on Mar 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The new (2008+) doohickey is pretty solid and a big improvement , however the standard spring is what gets stretched loose and could cause failure.
Most that install the Eagle kit use the optional torsion spring.
Dont forget to also order both gaskets if you're doing the install!
What’s the purpose of this upgrade: what’s the function?
Jeff F on Jun 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The stock one, especially on the get 1 bikes is weak and more often than not will break. This can be catastrophic with chunks of the broken metal in the engine. The Eagle Mfg is bether made. The Gen2 klr "doohickey" is a bit better but the spring is prone to breaking. I replaced mine on my 2012 klr, the balancer was in tact but my spring was broken. It's worth the money, but you'll need a tool to pull the fly wheel also I'd order a gasket set for the engine covers. The old gaskets may tear during removal.
does the torsion spring come with the doohickey up grade?
John C G on Jan 20, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The torsion spring does not come with the doohickey upgrade but it should be installed with the upgraded doohickey. The torsion spring provides a more stable tension on the doohickey and removes one more failure point (coil spring) from an otherwise very reliable engine.
What gaskets will I need to instal this?
A shopper on Sep 9, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Most times you can change it out without needing new gaskets. If you do tear one or both gaskets, it will depend on the here. For a 2015 for example, the parts are:
GASKET,GENERATOR CASE COVER
Part# 11060-1692

And

GASKET,GENERATOR COVER
Part# 11060-1693

They can be found here under the engine cover section. https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/oem-schematic/11
