If you ride your machine in unfamiliar territory and remote trail systems, taking the Garmin inReach Explorer+ is one of the best things you can do to make sure you stay safe and give your loved ones peace of mind. Designed to be one of the best premium, hand-held satellite communicators, the Explorer+ has location sharing, navigation, and life-saving SOS signaling to keep you safe and in touch literally anywhere in the world. The premium Explorer+ also boasts unique features including preloaded Delorme® TOPO maps with onscreen GPS routing, a built-in digital compass, barometric altimeter, and accelerometer.

Garmin also gives the Explorer+ a support system of 100% global Iridium satellite coverage, providing you 2-way text messaging that can be used to send custom messages or stock/canned responses to let people know you’re alright, still on route, etc. The Explorer+ can also track your location along the trail and share your position, letting your spouse / family track your progress at a glance. In extremely critical situations, an SOS signal can be triggered to alert emergency responders at a 24/7 search and rescue monitoring center—ensuring you get help when you need it most. But, Garmin works to make dangerous situations less likely when you pair the Explorer+ with your phone or mobile device and use the Earthmate® app to access downloadable maps, U.S. NOAA charts, color aerial imagery, and more.

Which inReach Is Right for You?
As satellite communicators, both the inReach SE+ and Explorer+ offer identical messaging capabilities. However, it’s on the GPS navigation side that their differences become apparent. While inReach SE+ uses GPS to provide basic grid navigation and allow you to drop waypoints, mark key locations, track your progress, and follow a breadcrumb trail back to base – the inReach Explorer+ goes a step beyond, providing full-fledged GPS on-map guidance with preloaded TOPO mapping and waypoint routings viewable directly on the unit. Plus, a built-in digital compass, barometric altimeter and accelerometer are included with Explorer+ to help you get and maintain accurate bearings anywhere on or off the beaten path.

Great safety device, a little complicated
Has so many features we have yet to use. It will take an average person a little time to figure it all out but worth it.

A necessity
The GPS function isn't great, the list of features isn't great either, but I purchased it for emergency situations and I love having it with me. I also LOVE the ability to text and receive text msgs. Every text you send has a link to a map showing your exact location.

Garmin inReach Explorer+
A must-have device for any group traveling where there may be limited cell phone coverage. The iPhone app is a plus, improving navigation ability . The monthly fees are expensive but its a small price to pay for emergency services.

inReach Explorer + Works Great
I gave it perfect marks across the board because I can't find fault with it so far. I pair it with my iPhone using the Earthmate app. The iphone stays on my handlebars in my mount and is powered by 3BR Powersports TAPP USB port. The inReach goes in my pocket or backpack. 2-way texting is great feature that goes beyond the standard SOS and GPS capabilities. Easy to sync with my Mac and iPad too.

Pricey? Yes. Knowing you can be rescued from the middle of nowhere? Priceless!

Does Garmin offer an off-road vehicle recovery service subscription option similar to the SPOT SOV service?
A shopper on Nov 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I do not know, but would be nice to know.
Have not used to full potential, just got for emergency.
What sort of service is needed to use the satellite comms?
Mark M on Oct 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: HI Mark, I have the basic "Safety" plan. It has unlimited preset texts and (I think) a limited number of other texts included per month. SOS coverage is included. Current (Oct-2017) subscription cost for the Safety plan is $12.43 per month including taxes. If you use all the features it will cost you a little more per month. Garmin also offer emergency insurance options in case you ever needed to be airlifted. Great little device for adventurers at best price with RMATV Quick Cash!
I am interested in buying this unit, but I do a lot of hiking in Europe (already 9 weeks this year) and I want to know if one can download or install a chip with the topo maps of all of Europe as this would be a very important feature in making my decision?
Alan R on Jul 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Wow, I wish I could answer that but we only off road in the US> It is very reassuring though to have it with us.
Can you download custom tracks to this like you can a GPS?
MARC B on Dec 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but you download them through the InReach web interface/sync software instead of through Garmin's BaseCamp software.
