  • Bell MX-9 Adventure MIPS Helmet

    Michael in TN

MX-9 Adventure / Optic white with MIPS

This purchase was a replacement for a retired MX-9 Adventure. This is the upgraded MIPS version. There are still non MIPS versions out there, but I opted for the MIPS. I have not seen them on sale yet, and with the recent bump in motorcycle sales, it might be a while. I bought this just prior to doing a Smokey Mountain 500/600 ride. 3 days with 8 to 10 hour days in the saddle. It's sort of middle of the road for weight. Can't say that the weight is noticeable one way or the other. The most important thing is fit, and the MX-9 fits me. I wear Shoei's for street only and the fit is comparable. Comfortable across the crown and around the forehead. Snug up against the jaw bone with no contact on the cheeks. No pressure points. Excellent ventilation, although the there is no way to close the vents in the crown of the helmet. On cool mornings, this could be an issue. At highway speeds, the bill will catch air if you turn your head, but they all do that. At a trail pace it is not noticeable. All that air flow comes at a small price. Noise. This is not a quiet helmet, but I always wear molded ear plugs, so it's not a issue for me. Oversized ear recesses for speakers, if you are into that, are a nice addition. The face shield closes tightly and the detents are positive. This allows the shield to be up in different positions with no worries that it will suddenly fall shut. The main benefit is the opening size. I can wear my Scott or Thor goggles with this helmet, with the face shield in the open, or full down position. I swapped out the clear shield for the dark smoke. This allows me to go with a clear goggles and flip the shield down in direct sunlight. Fit and finish are excellent. At the price this is a great helmet at an excellent price point. For a few dollars more Bell offers multiple color schemes from flat black to patterns to camo. I have always been an optic white guy, and some ADV helmets just are not offered in white. If this helmet fits your head shape and size, I don't think you can go wrong.

  • Leatt GPX 4.5 V20.1 Helmet

Nice helmet, but incredibly tight for the size

I've owned this helmet for a while now, and overall I'm happy with it (now). My reservation about it is using their sizing chart, I measured my head and bought the recommended XL size. Once I received the helmet, I tried it on and MY GOD it was so tight, once I finally was able to put it on, my head was under so much pressure, it gave me a headache. The next problem was trying to remove the helmet. It was so difficult, I thought it was going to tear my ears off! It was painful. As an experiment, I pulled the cheek pads out of the helmet and put them under a board and put weights on the top of the board, hoping it would make them slimmer. It didn't work. Then I contacted Leatt, and found that they sell replacement cheek pads. I bought a size smaller than what is shipped in the helmet. The new pads are size 53. Even with the smaller cheek pads, the helmet was still difficult to don and remove, but (thankfully) it got better after a month or so. Now it fits comfortably, but jeeez. So the good thing is that it fits well now (snug and safe), and I do like the styling. It's also much lighter than the cheap Bilt helmet that I used to own. Bad news is that I had to pay an extra $40 for the replacement cheek pads, and also the hassle of dealing with getting the helmet to fit. Not to mention the delay of waiting for the cheek pads to arrive. I don't know if buying a larger than the recommended size is the answer. It might be too large to protect you in the event of a crash. With Ricky Mountain's return policy, I suppose you can try one size larger, and return it if it's too large.
