Going by the picture I was skeptical to buy this because it looks so bulky and not very form fitting compared to other full coverage chest protectors available. It actually fits very well and looks very nice on. I ride in woods and bump trees, get smacked by branches and any crashes are usually on rocks or roots. Protection is excellent, I feel very safe in it. It’s a bit heavy compared to my last Evs but Ill take it for all the CE protection this provides. I like the wrap around side protection as well. Ton of coverage front and back but does not feel bulky and it moves with you. Fit me near perfect right out of the box but there is a good amount of adjustability if needed. I can imagine this will be pretty hot to wear in the summer but there is a foam pad inside the back that can be removed to get more air flow while still providing plenty of protection on your back. Im glad I bit the bullet and spent the money on a CE chest protector over a standard one.
First the good - I am 6' 0" and 205lbs. I bought the large / x large size and it is a little big, but it is adjustable to a good fit. I am probably towards the smaller end of its fitment range which is fine. It is very sturdy and provides great protection. I like the overall design.
Now the bad - approx. 30 minutes into my FIRST, very easy ride with the vest, one of the screws that hold the right bicep guard on came out. Of course I didn't know it until I stopped so now I have to find a replacement screw to make it work again. The bicep guard is not a huge deal, but still for the money it should be better right out of the package. This vest uses many small screws to hold the various pieces and parts together. A better design would be heavy snaps or more hook & loop material. At this price point I would not expect to have to use a screwdriver and check all of the hardware every time I ride. I guess I'm gong to have to put thread lock on the rest of the screws before I use it again.
I originally purchased the Atlas Guardian Chest protector to go with my Atlas air neck brace and while it worked, I was not thrilled it only offered CE protection for the back and minimal rib coverage.
I had tried the old version of the Fox Raptor before but it was the SM/MD size and while it fit my body (5'10" and 175 lbs) my neck brace would not fit. I am between the two sizes so decided to go with the LG/XL this time and glad I did. While it does not fit a snug as the smaller size, I can slide my Atlas Air neck brace inside the back of the guard and the front sits on the chest pad keeping it planted without the need for straps.
I also would note this Raptor is identical to the old model which is about $70 less on sale but the new CE version provides more significant chest protection. It seems they have also worked out the screw issue with the shoulder pads but I added loctite to be safe.
Overall, I feel a little safer on the bike and the elastic with velcro straps on the sides helps keep it in place. The color options are decent, since the navy blue goes with most of my riding gear. I would prefer an under jersey guard but nothing offers this much protection (at least without being stifling hot).
As a casual rider who likes to do stupid stuff well beyond my skill level i bought the most secure looking device i could find. I love this thing though i think ive become a worse rider due to my now much more free spirited approach to death traps. I thought now that i feel safer i should buy a bigger bike and now i hope i survive.. this think made me spend all my money
