Details

The Gaerne SG-12 Boot is the flagship in Gaerne's offroad lineup, sporting some of the best protection available and a race-winning design that's proven itself time and again by pros and amateurs everywhere.

Design details of the SG-12 begin with an anatomically designed shin plate that is adjustable for larger calves and knee braces. The larger opening is sealed by a stretchable Acronos fabric gaiter for a tight barrier against water and debris. A large layout of impact-resistant TPU runs around the boot and connects with the "Razorback" support strut that extends up the rear of the boot.

This "Razorback" strut is the backbone of the SG-12’s dual-pivoting glide plate design, giving you excellent range of motion with joints that glide and shift instead of simply rotate. This keeps your ankle in its natural orientation while bending, making the boot move according to your foot, not the other way around.

The medial side of the boot is covered by the full-length grip guard that supplies huge amounts of traction while still resisting heat coming off your bike. Wrap the SG12 up with a solid set of alloy buckles and a memory cell foam lining, and you’ve got serious protection with a comfortable, locked-in feel that's unique to your foot.

The Dual Stage Pivot System is a revolutionary new system exclusive to Gaerne. The first pivot is attached to the "Wishbone" and provides a rigid component that offers a strong lateral support while a glide-plate keeps the upper in a firm and upright position. The second pivot is fixed on a sliding glide that allows the riders foot to feel natural while on the peg in a shifting or breaking situation; however, it will "bottom out" and absorb shock in the case of over-jumping a jump or in the case of unwanted compression.

    Comfort
  • Stretchable Acronos fabric gaiter.
  • Shock absorbing heel cup.
  • Adjustable size opening shin-plate.
  • Set of four robust alloy buckles.
  • Anti-shock, dual-compound sole.
  • Memory cell foam inner-lining.
  • Removable dual-density insole.
  • High wear components are replaceable.
  • Low profile stitched sole.

    Protection
  • Supportive "Razorback" strut.
  • Full-length, heat-resistant grip guard.
  • Dual-pivoting glide plate hinge system.
  • Redesigned stainless toe cap.
  • Low profile reinforced toe box.
  • Supercross Shank: This is the best shank money can buy-lighter, stronger.

The boot is more comfortable while riding than standing. Normally I'm a 9.5 - 10 shoe size but ordered a 9, which was bang on.
I was used to using a lesser boot so when I got into these, there was a lack of feel initially but got used to it quickly.

These boots are amazing. Very well built. Built for battle. They offer maximum protection. They seem a little stiff at first but still able to walk around fine. My feet stayed cool and dry from the added ventilation from the liner. The buckels are now my favorite type. They're so easy to latch and stay latched. A couple things to get used to it the metal toe protector. Once I went to hit the rear brakes and hit it way too hard actually causing me to go down. Another time the metal part got caught under the brake pedal. But I'm sure I'll get used to them. The other thing is they seem to run a little big. It would be nice to have half sizes. They really are a beautiful boot though and look like they will last for years.
First day of wearing these boots for ten hours straight and my feet still felt great.
The quality and detail of the boot is impressive.
First impression of these boots show how well made they are. They look extremely tough, durable.

Great boots for the money
These boots are very comfortable right out of the box. The break-in period was pleasant. They offer good support and seem like they would protect you in the event of a crash. My only complaint is the buckle system. I wish there was a way to set the ratchets up so that they didn't change lengths when taking the boot on or off.

LOVE these boots
Probably the most comfortable pair of boots i have ever worn. very natural movement, superior protection, great adjustability. I wear a size 11 and the boot was slightly roomy inside, but a thick sock takes up the extra space. Beautifully made boots.

Love these boots
I highly recommend these boots and would buy them again tomorrow. I wear a 13 in athletic shoes and ordered the 13 and the fit was perfect. Within a few minutes of riding they had good feel with my WR 450 with factory controls. I wouldn't want to go hiking in them but walking around during stops on the trail was no problem at all. They paired very nicely with Fly F-16 pants.

Best boots for durability and price!
Upgraded from my 6yr old SG10s (which held up great) but the added features of the SG12s make the worth every penny. Awesome boot. Rocky Mountain offers them at a great price also!

First Impressions on Gaerne SG-12 Boots
Let me preface this review by saying I only have about 250 dual sport miles in this boot.
My first impression when unboxing was these are pretty heavy boots, lots of heavy-duty plastic with some leather.
Before the first ride, I removed the steel tips as these are slick when tipping on the pavement. They easily unscrewed and can be put back on if needed.
The fit feels very similar to a ski boot which immediately made me think I may have made a mistake purchasing these. Very stiff. These are going to take some time to really break in whereas my FOX Comp5s were comfortable right out of the box.
On the pegs, they felt high or just different. Missed a lot of gears due to the stiffness. At the end of the day I found myself lifting my entire leg. Since the boot and pivot point is mostly plastic, I'm a little worried about this ever breaking in to my expectations.

On the upside, it seems like these boots are made to last and can be resoled. When you have them on, you feel as if you're feet are invulnerable. Latches are OK with the standard notched plastic adjusters. Did at least 10 water crossings on this ride and experienced no leaks at all.
The jury is still out on these. Will post an update after a few more rides.

How is sizing with the boot ? I wear a 9.5 usually and don't know whether to order a 9 or a 10
ROGER W on Oct 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The sizing of the boot is pretty true to size. I would always order up rather than down because you can always wear a thicker sock to take up some of the difference if needed.
How does this boot compare to the sidi? I own the sidi boots and am happy, but these look to be a great deal.
Matthew J on Oct 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Had Sidi's they were great. I switched to SG12's in 2009 and rode 100's of hours and 6 seasons. I did wear out the original sole as well as two replacement soles. The uppers held up unbelievably well and still felt safe after all that use. I puchased another pair of sg12's and they are even better with the now lower toe box. I do notice that the toe plastic is wearing quickly from the shifter on the new boot though. You really can't go wrong with either boot but I plan to stick with sg12's
What's better the gaerne sg12 or the A-star tech 10?
Nick w on Oct 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The 12s are a little taller on the toe than the 10s but this is a non-issue when in actual riding position. I have never had an issue with it. The 10s have a bootie that some absolutely hate but that never bothered me.

I can wear me 12s all day without a problem. I've forgotten that I've had them in for well over an hour after riding. No discomfort with any hard impacts of any sort. No rubbing, no blisters, nothing to speak of.

Just get them. If you aren't happy with them, you won't be happy with anything else.
i go back and forth bw 10 and 10.5 shoe size i think bc of wide feet. if i move up to size 11 would i be to big even with a sock?
logan b on Jun 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I wear 10.5 street shoes without fail. I’ve been using the size 10 gaerne SG 12s, two sets so far. The toe box has room to fit, and personally I would rather a little snug than too big.
Dose the 2016 sg12 have the up dated toe box?
A shopper on Mar 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I am not sure what you mean about "updated toe box" but I can tell you that the toe box on these boots are generally very roomy. I had quite a bit of space to move around in mine. It is very padded and comfortable on the inside as well. It has the metal toe cap and ultra-hard plastic on the top and around the toe. I hope this answers your quesiton!
Is the Black/hi Vis boot their 2016 model? Or was it the 2015 Limited Edition?

Height of size 7 SG boots ?
A shopper on Oct 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: About 17".
What is the waterproofing like on these?
Brock N on Mar 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The boots hold up fairly well through water. I bought my boots in 2015 and I am still using them to this day. The boots work fantastic, I really have not had any problems with these boots, the only time they didn't really hold up all that well was when I completely dunked the boots under water while I was riding. Of course then they didn't hold up all that great, but that will happen with any boot if you do that to it. After they dried they work like they were still new. Overall these boots are awesome.
How is the fit compared to regular shoes?
Marc M on Feb 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I bought my first pair a year ago. The sizing on their size 12 was perfect for my normal size 11-1/2 or 12 shoes. The ankle feels a little tight at the beginning, but that is also the great feature of these boots. It takes a ride or two to get used to it and I find it comfortable and reassuring. I've worn Tech 8's for many years, and thought I'd miss the booties: I don't.
I really love the Gaernes.
First Gaerne boots, always a sidi guy. I have a fat 11.5 foot. I wear the 12.5 sidis now but that leaves me no room for thicker winter socks. Do i go for the 12 or the 11 in Gaerne?, as i hear they run big
Thomas K on Jan 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hey man I’ve ran the Sidi’s and alpinstars forever and I’ve ran 11-12’s. I’ve got some wide flippers my self and found that my sg12s were a bit roomy at an eleven. However with a thick winter sock it would be pretty snug👍🏼 Hope this helps man 🍻 you’ll never buy another pair 👌🏼
Does this boot prevent hyperexstention?
A shopper on Feb 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: If you are speaking of hyper extension of the ankle. It does give protection from it but not 100 % no boot does...These are the best boot I have ever had. Comfortable and feel is great out of the box...No need to break in.
My boy wears a size 13 Fox Instinct boot but goes through 2 pairs of boots per season. Does the sizing of a Fox instinct 13 compare to an SG12.?
Bob W on Aug 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: From my experience with a smaller size in fox boots thy are sized very similar.
I have pair of Alpinestars Super Victory boots that I like for vintage and they fit very much like my Tech 7 did from the mid 90s. I wanted to step up in protection so I ordered a new pair of tech 7 s and they were so narrow through the instep that they were painful on the arch of my foot. Does anyone else have flat feet that can tell me if the SG12 or SG10 will be a comfortable choice?
Jonathan J on Jan 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don't have flat feet so I really don't have a correct answer for you, but I can tell you that they are the most comfortable boot that I have ever had., From the first time I put them on till the last time that I rode.
How long does it take for the boots to wear in and how much foot peg feel do you have with these boots?
Daniel N on Jan 11, 2019
BEST ANSWER: For me the boots felt broken in within a couple of hours of using them normally just walking around and riding normally. They were comfortable almost immediately of putting them the 1st time. I just walked around the yard and house for an hour or so and then used them the next morning for some trail riding. Going from my Fox boots to these I felt they have much more peg feel and toe feel than my last set of boots. These almost remind me of riding with shoes on compared to the feel of other boots.
Where are these boots made? It seems like a lot of Italian companies are outsourcing these days, which impacts quality.
Dmitriy M on Aug 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Best off-road boot on the planet. Made in Italy.
I have always worn Alpinestars (since 1995) but my last pair of tech 8's wore much quicker & to me feel like they are cheaper made than in years past. Seriously considering buying sone SG12's. Any feedback from people who have worn the 2?
A shopper on Oct 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: After a season of offroad enduro style riding my SG 12s are holding up great, It is a truly a high quality built boot with excellent buckles and armor protection. The boot is very roomy inside so choose your size well. No failure to ANY part of boot as we go into my 2nd season of riding (about 45 miles every weekend) Sole is holding up well with sharp aftermarket pegs. If you choose the SG 12 you will receive a very high quality made boot ,a bit heavy compared to some .. but the protection is also at a premium . People who purchase a high end boot for the first time will quickly realize why they cost so much more than a base line boot . Safety & longevity is the strong points of the SG 12s . I also got several years out of my Sidi Crossfire SR . Cannot go wrong with either brand . Small ,narrow feet/ankle/legs ,go Sidi. Bigger, wider or you like more toe room Gaerne 12s work great!
What year of boot is this?
Leroy C on Aug 13, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Probably 2018, as the only difference is the white straps, which can be bought from Gaerne if you don't like the current black. I have boots from 2010 (just keep resoling them), as well as some newer (hate the current colors) they are the best off-road boot on the planet. Good luck.
Do you know what the size difference is between alpinestars and gaernes?
A shopper on Oct 27, 2019
BEST ANSWER: A Stars are more narrow. SG12 is wider in the toe. The boot is a true size 11 for example.
How is the ventilation in these? I sometimes do some desert riding and my feet tend to sweat a lot. My old Alpinestar Tech 8s were alright, but I'd like to try something new.
Mike J on Oct 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I wear these all the time hot or cold with no issues. Though I can't say my feet sweat more than most or less than most riders? I have worn these all day long at Glamus in the desert and experienced no problems. best fitting boot I have ever owned.
there is no boot size option of 10.5? only 10 & 11!!
Faisal A on Dec 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: That is correct. There are no half sizes in these boots. You will either have to go up a size or down. With these boots we suggest going up to an 11. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Does the sg12 come in half sizes as well?
Greg A on Jun 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Unfortunately, these do not come in half sizes. If you are a half size we suggest going up to the nearest whole size. For example if you are a 9.5 purchase a 10.
Are the red/white/blue sg12's new for may/June of 2017? If so, when will the rest of the sizes be available?
Lee D on May 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, these are new for the Spring of 2017 but we do not have any information at this time on when the other sizes will be available.
