Odd sizing and cut - 6-1 170lbs, 40" chest; size me...

I'm 6'-1", 170lbs, 40" chest, 33" waist and bought a medium even though the size chart says I should be a large. I normally wear a large and am between a 42 and 44 in motorcycle jackets (alpinestars, cortech). 42 feels tight, 44 is loose in those brands. On this jacket, the overall length is ok, the sleeve length is ok but it fits huge around the chest and waist, with no means to cinch the waist. It looks like a giant lawn and leaf garbage bag on me. Has many pockets (one of which was partially sewn shut). The vents are very small, with no chest vents. The only vents are small ones on the upper arms and lower back. The padding and armor seems excellent, although the shoulder pads do tend to spin around when you put it on. If I were going to keep it, I would add some velcro or sew the shoulder pad pockets in so they don't move so much. I really wanted to like this jacket, and it may fit people who aren't as thin as I am. I thought about trying a small - but really? A small for 6'-1" 170? There is also a number 36 written on the lower back in white chalk, like it didn't come out in the wash after the jacket was made. I wanted to like this, but it just doesn't fit my body type. I tried it on 3 different times with different shirts underneath. Hard to stomach spending $300 on a Klim Dakar that doesn't come with pads. I think I will try the Thor Terrain next - that seems to fit the skinny people like me better

    Outstanding Product

So I've had this jacket now for about 2 months and have ridden several hours in the woods and on the trials bike. First of all, when you get the jacket, take the time to find all the pockets and vents. It has plenty. No issues with any of the pockets. (The one inside left chest was the last to find). They hold gear although the front pockets are on the small side. Zippers hold, no issues. Waterproof/Windproof- Absolutely. I had the cuffs pulled tight and when I opened them after my first ride, sweat actually ran out of the sleeve. Venting- Two chest vents are minimal. 2 back vents are large. The key to venting is to open the sleeves and the front zipper. There's plenty of velcro up the front to hold the jacket closed and it allows ample air to vent through the back vents. You can also open the arm pit zippers accordingly. With the venting, you just need to get a little creative. Tough- I've ridden through green briars and brambles and nothing seems to snag on the jacket. Very tough. Sizing- Mine is a little large which gives me room to move. The sleeves are long which I prefer because my arms are long. When I'm prepping I just tug the sleeves tight around my wrist with the velcro straps to keep them out of the way. As I warm up riding, I just open the sleeves completely to vent my arms. I've ridden down to 20 degrees and don't have any trouble balancing the venting. Overall- This is a 5-star product. It performs extremely well. It would be a bargain at twice the price really because it appears that it will last a long time.

    MSR Xplorer Jacket

This is a quality jacket that, unfortunately, I will be returning. I like everything about this jacket except it didn't fit me. I am 5'10", 200lbs, 46" chest and ordered a large. The arm length and waist fit is perfect but it doesn't have enough room in the shoulders for me. I'm afraid if I order an XL the arm length will be too long. I so wanted this jacket to work as it is well built and nice looking.
