Best first helmet for the money

TL;DR - for your first helmet, this is the best you can get for the money. I've owned this helmet for just shy of a year and thought I'd go ahead and review it. This is actually my second helmet purchase. I did no research when I bought my first helmet, instead relying on the local powersports dealership to help me pick one out. The helmet they suggested was heavy, didn't fit properly, had extremely poor visibility, and started visibly falling apart within a week of purchase. Took that one back, did my research, and bought this helmet instead. I could not be happier with my purchase. I'll list out the negatives first. This is an entry level helmet. It's both DOT and SNELL approved so they had to cut corners somewhere to bring you that level of rating at the price point. * There are only two shell sizes which means that unless you have a large head, the helmet is probably going to look really big on you * It's a bit heavy at 3.75lbs. It's not unbearable, but may take some getting used to * It's a bit noisy at highway speeds. Again, not unbearable, but certainly louder than other options. Wear ear plugs and you'll be fine * It has some wind buffeting at highway speeds. I don't notice it at all until I reach 70mph and it's really distinct at 75mph * Only comes with the clear lens. All the pictures show it with the dark lens but that's a $60 upgrade * It's pinlock compatible if you buy the upgrade pinlock ready lens * In colder weather (32F/0C and colder) the stock lens *will* fog up on you, though it clears pretty fast once you stop moving So with all those negatives, why did I give still give it a 5-star rating? Because as a first helmet, you're not going to find one that gives you as much protection (SNELL, emergency quick release system cheek pads) and this level of comfort at this price point. While I've never tested its safeness (and hope I never do), I've worn it for multiple hours in a row and not experienced any pressure points, or uncomfortableness. Being able to remove the inner linings and wash them (in the washing machine!) is extremely handy because while it has solid ventilation, if you're in stop and go traffic, you're going to sweat, and that lining is going to get stinky. Pop out the lining, wash it, let it air dry and pop it back in good as new (just make sure the emergency pulls go toward the chin, not the back of the helmet). Other highlights: * The shield lock keeps the face shield locked tight, and I can open it with gloved hands without an issue * Speaking of the shield, I've ridden in rain and never had the seal leak, keeping the inside of the shield completely dry * Ventilation is solid. I've worn this helmet in 110F heat index and as long as I'm moving at least a little bit, my head is fine temp-wise * Has cut-outs for glasses, so if you wear glasses, or want to wear sunglasses, you can without causing discomfort * Scorpion customer service is AMAZING. Seriously amazing. I contacted them with some issues I was having and they completely took care of me, even though in the end we discovered it was user error. I have absolutely no regrets with this helmet. Probably one of my best purchases gear-wise. I suggest it to every new rider looking for their first helmet. Yeah, it would have been nice to have a second, tinted shield, or pinlock-compatible shield, or more shell sizes, but all of those would raise the price. For the price, you're not going to find a nicer helmet. When I'm ready for a new helmet, based on my experience with this one, and Scorpion in general, I'll probably end up with another Scorpion lid.

  • HJC CL-MAX III Modular Helmet

    Spencer in NC

I am impressed with the features and fit of this helmet. This is my first modular and have always have good results with my HJC helmets in the past. It has the best of both worlds for ventilation and comfort at slow speeds, and the protection I want at higher speeds.

  • Bell MX-9 Adventure Dash MIPS Helmet

    Bell MX-9 Adventure Helmet

This helmet is a game changer! Having bought a dual sport, I found that wind noise from a regular helmet with goggles was almost unbearable at higher speeds than 40mph, and really detracted from the ride. So I looked for a decent full shield MX style helmet, to which I found the Bell MX9 adventure. This helmet is super comfortable, lens changes are a breeze(maybe 30 seconds on a lazy day?), and the wind noise is almost non existent. With 4 positions to put the lens in, you can have any amount of airflow you could want, and go from open to closed in an instant! The lens has a nice big lip to open and close with, making it super easy to operate, even with gloves on. The chin vent is great as well, being able to quickly open and close with gloves as well, and providing ample ventilation straight into the helmet face area, but without a ton of noise. The interior is soft and well ventilated, and comms ready. I could wear this helmet all day and never feel like I needed to get out of it. Highly recommend this helmet to anybody looking for a quality dual sport style helmet at a great price point with tons of great features and availability.

  • AFX FX-41 Dual Sport Motorcycle Helmet

    Dalton in OH

    Bad Material

I'm a fan of the face shield and shaded lens that can flip down... I'm not a fan of the plastic that the helmet is made of. It brushed against my bike plastics and scratched the plastic of the helmet (not the paint but the actual plastic). For the value this is a good deal for the eye protection but I know I'm hanging mine up for a better helmet

  • LS2 Strobe Modular Motorcycle Helmet

    David in AZ

    Looks nice, fits poorly.

This helmet looked nice for my wife for ATV'ing. Initial fit for medium was great, only it fit high on her head and forehead. The breath shield when the modular was closed was just below her bottom lip. The tinted slider visor cleared her glasses but also stopped high. No foam inserts to pull out inside. The modular section when raised wouldnt come back down. No release for that, just really stiff and hard on her neck to get it back down. Boxed it up and called Rocky Mtn.
