There’s plenty to love with Can-Am’s 2018 lineup as the company recently revealed three all-new UTVs:

  • Maverick Trail with 50" width for trail riding
  • Maverick X3 X rc Turbo for technical crawling
  • New specialty models in the Defender line

Can-Am’s expansion into new market segments gives plenty of reasons for Can-Am fans to celebrate, and these new models will surely keep the industry as strong and competitive as ever.

Can-Am Maverick Trail

The new 2018 Maverick Trail is only 50" wide, allowing it to literally go where no Can-Am Maverick has gone before.

The Maverick Trail includes Can-Am’s Rotax V-twin engine in two options: the Maverick Trail 800 (51 hp Rotax 799.9 cc) and the Maverick Trail 1000 (75 hp Rotax 976 cc). Both choices offer attractive power for trail use, but the Maverick Trail 1000 is notable for having the first engine of its size on a trail-width UTV. Can-Am is also keen to point out that the engine doesn’t require any maintenance for the first year for most riding schedules (1,800 miles). But even after that, the machine is designed to be accessible and friendly for DIY maintenance.

The Maverick Trail includes a Quick Response System T (QRS-T) CVT. This allows the transmission to engage and adjust quickly, offering the optimal amount of torque all the time. It features electronic drive belt protection to keep the belt in good shape.

The Maverick Trail features a 90.6" wheelbase (the longest in its class) for better stability. DPS models are available that offer Dynamic Power Steering (DPS), which allows the steering to adjust based on the machine’s speed. The traction system offers four variations: 2×4 open rear differential, 2×4 locked rear differential, 4×4 open rear differential and 4×4 locked rear differential.

The suspension features a double a-arm in the front and TTA-T in the rear – both with sway bars. This gives you 10" of travel in the front and 10.5" of travel in the rear.

The machine offers Ergoprint seats for rider comfort that sit low for ideal viewing range. The driver’s side can adjust up to 5", and the tilt steering wheel accommodates this. Two grab bars are available for the passenger – one on the dash and one on the door.

Another highlight of the Maverick Trail is the class-leading storage capacity: a full 5.3 gallons, complete with a roomy glove box. The rear cargo box can handle 300 lbs. and features a LinQ quick-attach system to make accessories easy to add.

Stay tuned for a full test report on the Maverick Trail coming in the next few weeks.

Maverick X3 X rc Turbo

Expanding the already stellar Maverick X3 lineup, the X rc Turbo and X rc Turbo R bring enhanced control to rock crawling and other technical riding in challenging terrain.

The big highlight for the Maverick X3 X rc Turbo is Can-Am’s new Smart-Lok technology. When engaged, it is able to lock the front differential with the right load at the right moment. It comes equipped with two modes: Rock and Trail. All you need to do is press a button – no need to stop or even slow down. Thanks to its electronically controlled automatic mode, the Smart-Lok system recognizes and anticipates your actions as the driver, enhancing the machine’s traction without sacrificing as much maneuverability as other systems.

The X rc Turbo has a few enhancements over the regular Maverick X3 to make it more adept at technical crawling, including Maxxis Liberty 30x10x14 tires (front and rear), additional HMW protection, and a 4,500-lb. winch.

The Maverick X3 X rc Turbo brings a lot to the table for rock-crawling enthusiasts, but the X rc Turbo R takes it to another level, moving the width from 64" to 72" and trading out the 120 hp turbo engine for 172 hp (with an intercooler).

New 2018 Defender Specialty Models

Three distinct machines are getting added to the Defender family of utility-recreation side-by-sides, each one offering unique enhancements over the base Defender model.

The Can-Am Defender X mr HD10 is a utility side-by-side with aggressive improvements to make it ready to tackle muddy environments. One of the big additions is the Smart-Lok front differential technology. This is the same system that makes the Maverick X3 X rc Turbo better able to handle rock crawling, though in the case of the Defender X mr, the Smart-Lok technology has been tuned for mud instead of rocks. It also sports other improvements, like ITP Cryptid mud tires, a front bumper, rock sliders, mud guards, 13.5" ground clearance and more.

The Can-Am Defender XT-P HD10 takes the existing Defender and develops its recreational abilities while maintaining its utility roots. Improvements include Fox 2.0 Podium shocks (front and rear), 12" ground clearance, adjustable driver seat, added storage and improved instrumentation. The 72 hp Rotax 976 cc V-twin engine is tuned for serious work but also delivers great recreational fun.

The Can-Am Defender MAX Lone Star HD10 is an excellent choice for either exploring the backcountry or taking on the toughest jobs. The biggest difference is its additional row of seating, taking the capacity from three people to six. True to its Lone Star moniker, it’s designed to be bigger in nearly every way – bigger tires (28"), bigger dimensions (including 67" width), bigger ground clearance (13"), bigger payload (1,750 lbs.), bigger storage capacity (16.9 gallons) and more.
