The $500 motorcycle challenge is back, and this time, the crew is going racing.

Remember that crazy idea we had about sending $500 motorcycles through 5 Miles of Hell? Well, apparently that wasn’t crazy enough, because the guys are all back for more.

In this new challenge, our team heads to Juab Xtreme Racing, an intense and unforgiving enduro race in Nephi, Utah. The gnarly track and sizable purse typically attract riders like Colton Haaker and Cooper Abbott, but this year, we were attracted by the race’s all-new vintage class. This time around, it’s not about survival, it’s about whose bike is taking the top step of the podium.

The same rules from the original $500 challenge apply to this one:

  • Each rider gets only $500 to buy their bike
  • An additional $200 budget can be used to fix the bike
  • A $100 budget can be used on any bikes carried over from the 5 Miles of Hell challenge
  • Scrounging and fabrication are allowed so long as they’re approved by the other riders and done individually

If you thought the last challenge was a wild ride, you haven’t seen anything yet. All six episodes are live now and included below.

Episode 1: We’re BACK & RACING $500 Dirt Bikes

The familiar faces are back, plus two more: Eric, the head of our R&D department, and Charles, our mechanic-extraordinaire. Both of them are looking to strike gold on a $500 bike, along with Chance and Chase whose 5 Miles of Hell bikes are too new to fit the 1990 and older requirement for the vintage class. There may be plenty of time before the bikes head to Nephi, but everyone knows the race really starts right now.

Episode 2: These Bikes Have PROBLEMS

For better or for worse, everyone has their bikes. While some of the guys try to fix the carnage from Five Miles of Hell, others are starting fresh on their new-to-them machines. We’ve seen the guys get creative before, but to stay within their budget, they’re going to need to scrounge, skimp, and go full DIY to get these bikes ready.

Episode 3: SCAVENGING Parts for Our OLD Bikes

In search of some rare parts, the team takes a little trip to Bill’s Boneyard, the one-stop shop for used bike parts, vintage relics, and just about anything else you could dream up. It may as well be Christmas Morning for the guys as they scavenge for the missing pieces of their bikes and even find a few other treasures along the way.

Episode 4: $500 Motorcycle Olympics!

With all the immediate repairs made, it’s time to put the bikes to the test in the Utah desert. A few insane challenges should show whose bikes are holding up and whose will need more work before the main event. With pink spoke sleeves, switched bikes, and a #1 plate on the line, everyone is prepared to push it to the limit to win their challenges.

Episode 5: These Bikes ARE NOT Made for THIS!

The team should’ve been scared off by the challenges in the desert, at least that’s probably what they’re thinking after seeing X-Games and Endurocross pro Nick Thompson’s track. But will some advice and know-how from a pro help them gain the confidence they need to win at Juab, or will they be feeling more over the heads than ever?

Episode 6: It’s Time to GO RACING

The bikes are ready and the top step of the podium is waiting – it’s race day, baby! But, let’s be honest, all that really matters is beating each other. With the typical antics in between races, a few more signatures added to Wes’s full-ish gas tank, and no small number of mistakes, crashes, and passes, this day is guaranteed to be one for the books.

Now It’s Your Turn

Much like our first $500 motorcycle challenge, this experience reminded us how much we love working on bikes, riding, and racing, especially when doing it with friends. It’s why we got into the business, and it’s why we recommend you try out a challenge for yourself. Make your own rules, try your own variation – it doesn’t matter what you do so long as you’re enjoying riding, racing, and every bit of maintenance in between.

If you’re feeling inspired (let’s be honest, you should be), check out some of these resources that our team relied heavily on while completing their challenge:
