The 11th round of the 2016 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series presented by Maxxis, an AMA National Championship, took place September 24-25 at Marvin’s Mountain Top in Masontown, WV – the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Mountaineer Run.

Motorcycle Report

The race started with Ricky Russell taking the holeshot. However, he ran into early troubles, allowing Cory Buttrick to get around him. Buttrick was the early leader for the first lap of the race. Meanwhile, points leader Kailub Russell overcame a bad start to get into 2nd by the end of the first lap. Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KR4 FAR Team’s Thad Duvall followed behind.

K. Russell and Duvall both caught and passed Buttrick on the second lap. Duvall worked on catching K. Russell, but he ultimately had to back off and stick to a more comfortable pace. Meanwhile, R. Russell overcame his early misfortune to get into 3rd behind Duvall. At one point, it looked as though he might catch up and get into 2nd. However, Duvall wouldn’t have any of that, and he held on. In the end, K. Russell took the win, with Duvall finishing in 2nd and R. Russell placing 3rd (his first XC1 Pro podium).

K. Russell’s primary rival, Josh Strang, only finished in 7th in the XC1 Pro class and outside the top 20 overall, meaning that he didn’t earn any championship points. As a result, K. Russell now has a 50-point lead over Strang, and while that isn’t enough to clinch the title yet, it does put K. Russell in a comfortable position. While Strang will have a tough time catching K. Russell, at least he is far enough ahead of 3rd to secure his position in 2nd. Currently, Trevor Bollinger in is 3rd, but he is only 11 points ahead of Jordan Ashburn in 4th. There could still be movement in the final podium position before the end of the year.

ATV Report

Chris Borich grabbed the holeshot and headed off with the lead, with Landon Wolf and Walker Fowler in tow. Borich soon dropped back, and by the end of the first lap, Fowler was in the lead followed by Wolf and Brycen Neal. Neal then moved into 2nd and started working on catching Fowler. However, a mechanical issue forced him back.

Cole Richardson started out mid-pack, but he slowly worked his way up until he was in 2nd. He continued to close the gap between himself and Fowler, but there simply wasn’t enough time in the end. Fowler crossed the finish line with the win. Richardson placed 2nd. Jarrod McClure struggled in the first half of the race, but he finally managed to get into 3rd on lap 4, which is where he ultimately finished.

Fowler’s victory has extended his points lead to 51 points over Adam McGill in 2nd. With only two rounds left in the season, Fowler is in a good position on the way to the championship. Borich is currently in 3rd, 27 points behind McGill.
