Episode 1: Let’s Get It Started

We picked up this roached-out bike for $1,000, and the more we learn about it the more we think we overpaid. Luckily, the plan from the start was to take this thing all the way down to the frame and completely redo the entire bike. No good restoration would be complete without some great before and after pictures. Check out the “Before” gallery below.

We’ll be adding a few new pictures each week as the build progresses!

Episode 2: Getting Our Hands Dirty

We’ve given the chassis a quick once-over, but now it’s time to get our hands dirty and start the teardown. We won’t know how clapped our CRF450R really is until we get inside, but we can’t start that until we’ve given the bike a good washing the Wes way. Check out the gallery below for some close-ups of the teardown, and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to keep up with the series!

Episode 3: This Ain’t a Joke

We may have finished tearing the bike down, but this build is just getting started. In Episode 3, we find some problems we were expecting and some big ones that we weren’t. Plus, we give you an exclusive look at the where, who, and how of the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Video Team. Check it out, and don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel to keep up with the series!

Episode 4: It Ain’t Pretty, but it RUNS

After weeks of tearing our bike down, it’s time to start building it back up. In true Roached2Racing fashion, that means some unexpected challenges and some unbelievably clapped-out parts. It may not be pretty by the end, but at least it’ll run…probably.

There’s still more coming down the pipe, so be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay up-to-date on the Roached2Racing series!

The Build Process:

Episode 5: Bling Bling

The roached bike is finally running, but that doesn’t mean it’s ready to race yet. We’ve got a massive to-do list to complete before the bike can take any podiums, so, with our desert race fast approaching, it’s crunch time. There may be some trail-side fixes and hail to pay along the way, but that hasn’t stopped us before. We’re determined to see this through to the end and, with some new plastics, graphics, and bling, our bike is going to be fresh by the time we get there.

Stay tuned for the final episode of the series dropping next week.

First Ride and Final Touches:

Episode 6: From Roached to Racing

After the hours, days, and weeks spent on teardown, effort put into the rebuild, and a lot of problem solving in between, we’ve finally made it. The Roached bike is finished, and all of our hard work has built up to this: a USRA desert race in Monticello, UT. We plan on taking names and taking podiums…so long as the 14 year old ’05 can handle it. In the final episode of our Roached2Racing series, we’ll show footage from the race, break down the bike’s performance, and share our key takeaways of the build process. Check it out.

The Wrap-Up

In the end, the roached-out 2005 CRF450R that we picked up for $1,000 is running like new again, and is back to being reliable, competitive, and a whole lot of fun. It just goes to show you – with enough work, sweat, and TLC, anyone can take a bike from roached to racing.
