After an Easter-weekend break, the 2015 season of Monster Energy Supercross resumed in Houston on April 11. It was also the first 250SX West race since San Diego. Although there are still three races left in the 450SX class and one left in the 250SX West class, the leaders in both classes gained enough points to secure the championships regardless of what occurs in the rest of the season.

450SX Report

Near the beginning of the race, Cole Seely moved into the lead. Although in his rookie season in the 450SX class, Seely has shown he has the speed necessary to get podiums. In Houston, Seely proved he’s a real contender for wins as well. Once in 1st, he sped away. While the battles all occurred behind him, Seely raced to the finish line unchallenged.

Chad Reed and Andrew Short controlled the other two podium positions in the beginning of the race. Before long, Jason Anderson had moved into 3rd and set his sights on Reed. However, they both went down after a little contact between the two of them. This allowed Short and Josh Grant to take their places. However, Ryan Dungey and Eli Tomac were working their way up to the front after poor starts. Dungey eventually pushed himself into 2nd, and Tomac managed to get into 3rd.

Dungey’s results allowed him to clinch the 2015 450SX championship – his first since 2010. At 82 points ahead of Tomac, it is impossible to be caught even with three races remaining. The only question now is whether Tomac will remain in 2nd overall. Seely is only 13 points behind, and if he can pull off a couple more wins in the remaining races, it’s possible he could move into 2nd.

250SX West Report

Cooper Webb has been the star of the 250SX West class this season. Although he didn’t start out in podium position in Houston, he quickly worked on moving up front. First, Webb passed Tyler Bowers for 3rd. Next, he passed Matt Bisceglia for 2nd. And finally, he passed Shane McElrath for 1st. Once in the lead, it was smooth sailing until the finish.

Perhaps the most interesting story of the night belonged to the other two podium finishers: McElrath (2nd) and Malcolm Stewart (3rd). Both of them found themselves in the LCQ for the night, and both of them battled hard to not only make the main but also the podium. Their efforts proved how valuable the LCQ really can be in the final results.

Webb clinched the championship with his win. Before Houston, his biggest rivals were Bowers and Jessy Nelson. However, a recent crash persuaded Nelson to sit out the remaining two supercross rounds, and while Bowers did attempt to race in Houston, lingering back issues led him to pull out before the race ended. This allowed Zach Osborne and McElrath to move into 2nd and 3rd overall, respectively.
