450SX Report

The 450 class was stacked for the main event, and that was clear as the big bikes tore down the start straight. Right around the first corner, a whole mix of the fastest riders were battling for a top position. Ken Roczen got the holeshot, but Eli Tomac, Adam Cianciarulo, Cooper Webb, and Zach Osborne were close behind. Jason Anderson was only a few positions behind them, making for some intense competition.

The first of the shuffling started with Webb, who started to make a play for the podium. Cianciarulo had passed Tomac for 2nd by that point, so Tomac was taking the brunt of Webb’s pressure. Ahead of them, Roczen was starting to pull away with the lead while Tomac, who had finally pulled away from Webb, put a block pass on Cianciarulo for 2nd place.

Tomac’s pace was only increasing after he passed Cianciarulo. Roczen had a 2-second lead, but that was quickly dwindling as Tomac laid down some fast laps. He was reeling Roczen in, and eventually made his move coming out of the whoops section after taking the faster line. Roczen kept on Tomac’s rear wheel, though, waiting for his chance to take back the lead. He found it when Tomac slipped in the sand section. Roczen capitalized on the mistake and took back the lead, only for Tomac to take it back again in the whoops.

The lead was all but Tomac’s at that point. It was then a race for the podium, and that’s when Webb started his charge again. He passed Cianciarulo for 3rd and, on the final turn of the final lap, he passed Roczen for 2nd. The checkered flag saw Tomac, Webb and Roczen on the podium with Cianciarulo and Anderson finishing in the top 5 as well.

Justin Cooper had a lot of work to put in the main event. After his disappointing showing at last week’s triple crown, Cooper had a lot of ground to make up if he was going to keep his points lead for the next round. Add in Austin Forkner and Dylan Ferrandis’ determination to win, and the stage was set for one exciting race.

After the gate drop, however, it ended up being Alex Martin who took the early lead. Forkner and Ferrandis were both close behind while Cooper was shuffling through positions behind them. Martin didn’t lead for long, though – Forkner and Ferrandis both quickly overtook the Suzuki rider and started on their own battle for the lead.

Behind the battle for 1st place, Michael Mosiman, who had been laying down fast laps in his heat race, went down with a few other riders and got tangled in a mess of bikes. Whether he was injured or his bike was damaged, he did not rejoin the race. Ahead of him, Cooper was trying to make his way into a podium position by passing Luke Clout for 4th place.

At that point in the race, it was clear that Forkner and Ferrandis were in a race of their own – 3rd place was almost 10 seconds behind the two leaders. The competition between the two was starting to heat up, though. Ferrandis was putting the pressure on Forkner for the win, and he finally made his move in the turn after the whoops. On his way around, Ferrandis hit some lap traffic and bumped Forkner, pushing him off the track. Forkner didn’t lose hardly any time, reentering the track and finishing in 2nd place behind Ferrandis. Cooper rounded out the podium in 3rd place with Martin and Clout finishing in 4th and 5th place, respectively.

For the 450s Ken Roczen is keeping the red plate for San Diego. The points lead for the 250s, however, is going to Dylan Ferrandis. We’ll see who keeps the red plates after round 6, though.
