San Diego marked the sixth round of Monster Energy Supercross this year. And if there’s anything to be learned from how things went, it’s that there is still plenty of great racing to be had this season.

Ken Roczen pulled ahead right at the beginning, taking the holeshot and an early lead. Trey Canard was close behind him. After only a few laps, the two of them began a race-long battle. It began with the two of them trading positions multiple times before Canard finally was able to make a pass stick and stay in 1st. However, that didn’t end the intensity as Roczen nearly passed him a number of times. But in the end, Roczen couldn’t make anything work out, and Canard finished with the win.

Ryan Dungey worked his way up to 3rd, though he was never able to quite catch up with Canard and Roczen. He has finished on the podium in every race except for Anaheim 1 (where he finished 4th). Behind him were Chad Reed and Eli Tomac.

Although Dungey didn’t win, his consistency has allowed him to maintain a comfortable overall lead over Roczen. Canard still sits 18 points behind Dungey, but with two wins out of the last three races, it’s possible that he’s building sufficient momentum to still take the championship by the end of the season.

Zach Osborne started out in the lead with the holeshot, but it wasn’t long before Tyler Bowers made the necessary passes to position himself in 1st. Cooper Webb moved into 2nd, but Bowers pulled ahead. Around the midpoint of the race, Webb was able to close the gap and finally make a pass on Bowers. Webb finished with another win.

Shane McElrath was behind Webb and set his sights on Bowers once Webb and moved into 1st. It wasn’t long before McElrath successfully made the pass. Although he wasn’t able to catch Webb, he did finish in 2nd – a career best. Bowers took 3rd.

With four wins this season, Webb has created a points gap in the overall standings. Jessy Nelson, Bowers and Osborne all are within just a few points of each other for 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
