YZ250

For many of us, 2006 seems like it was just a couple of years ago. Yet, when it comes to the value of used bikes, a 2006 model basically triggers our brains to start calculating in dog years – especially if the bike has been ridden hard or had poor maintenance. But all hope isn’t lost when it comes to older bikes. If you know what you’re doing and have some cash to invest, even an old bike can be made new once again. Take a look at how we transformed our latest build, a 2006 YZ250 two-stroke, and gave the bike a second chance at life.

YZ250 Transformation

Our latest project plainly fit the stereotype of an older bike. The engine of the 2006 YZ250 was blown up when we got our hands on it, and the bike was in pretty bad shape. Historically this two-stroke model has an excellent reputation, so we had faith that the bike still some pretty good potential left to tap into. We bought it for just under $1000 and brought it back to the shop with two goals in mind: 1) to make this old beater rip again and 2) to make it look dang good in the process.

Since the motor was toast, we stripped the bike down to the frame first thing. The frame had definitely seen better days and we didn’t really feel like buffing it out, so we sent it off instead (along with the swing arm and fork components) to get powder coated. Not only did it save us some work, the black frame helped to give it the custom look we were going for.

We were basically starting from scratch on the engine, and decided to go through it using the Wrench Rabbit Engine Rebuild Kit to give it the overhaul that was needed. The Wrench Rabbit kit covers all the bases from the piston, crank, and cam chain to the bearings, seals and gaskets that would be needed. The cylinder needed to be repaired, so we sent it to Millennium to have it re-plated to match the provided Vertex piston. The clutch was shot as well, so we replaced it with a full set of Hinson components. However, we wanted to keep the engine as close to stock as possible, so we didn’t mess with it much more than that.

FMF Exhaust

The performance mods that we did on the YZ were pretty much all intake/exhaust related. We added the V-Force Reed Valve to help with the throttle response, and combined that with the addition of the FMF Fatty Pipe and Ti Power Core 2.1 Silencer to really give it a power boost. We adjusted the jetting for these additions to be just a bit leaner than stock with a 175 main jet, a 48 pilot jet, and the needle set at the stock #2 position.

Race Tech went through our suspension for us and replaced all the bearings and seals with Pivot Works components, and then adjusted the settings to work with our weight specs and riding style. We added some new Renthal FatBars and IMS foot pegs to help with comfort and performance as we ride as well.

The most noticeable difference style-wise on the YZ250 is the body. An observer would never know just by looking at the bike that it was a 2006. The transformation required upgrading the air box to a 2015 model so that we could then complete the full face-lift with Cycra 2015 style plastics. We topped that transformation off with a fresh set of graphics and a new Motoseat seat cover, and then added a bunch of bling components from Tusk to make the bike stand out, such as the Tusk Complete Wheel Kit, brake and shift pedals, and some caps and covers in bright blue to really polish off the look. When we were done, the bike looked brand new and ready to hit the track.

Finished YZ250 Better Than New

It’s always fun to breathe new life into an old bike, mixing elements of the old and new to bring a legend back to its prime. What bike would you like to see receive a second chance at life? Let us know in the comments below and we’ll see what we can do.
