Fox Racing has a proven track record of championships with their premium Instinct Boots. They’ve doubled down on that success for 2018 and released the latest Instinct with a set of refinements that push the boot’s performance to another level yet again.
The Instinct’s core features remain the same, so you’re still getting an unrivaled level of comfort right out of the box with zero break in time, the excellent buckle system that uses ball-and-socket type closures, and the dual-pivoting ankle hinges with lockout that prevent hyperextension injuries.
Differences and improvements for the 2018 model start with a new Duratac rubber compound that’s been engineered for the greatest amount of wear resistance and grip. This new rubber makes up the entirety of the sole so it can resist wear from sharp pegs, and it reaches up the entire length of boot’s medial side—giving a high level of grip as well as feedback from the bike. Along with a profile that’s been slimmed down even further, the 2018 Fox Racing Instinct Boots are among the most advanced mx and off-road boots ever offered.

Supportive strut on back absorbs forces from over extension

Pivoting buckles eliminate pinch and pressure points as foot moves
Low profile chassis gives comfortable, precise feel of bike
Construction
Self-adjusting, pivoting 4 buckle design
New-school bonded Duratac sole
Sole is fully replaceable
Duratac material has great grip and long life on the pegs
These boots on the surface look like state of the art MX boots, but underneath, I found that they are incredibly soft in the ankle zone, and I suffered because of it.
Please see the attached pictures showing the amount of dorsiflexion protection compared with my old 2014 Alpinestar Tech 5. In both pictures I applied approximately the same force on each boot (approx 10-15 lbs of pressure on the first test, and then approx 50lbs of pressure on the second test). The Fox Instincts folded like wet paper.
I would have thought that a brand-new high-end boot would have better support than a mid-grade 5 year old boot. But I had to learn the lesson the hard way.
If looking good and having a ton of ankle movement is important to you, then I am sure these boots are superior to other brands, but if you want proper ankle protection, I would definitely recommend looking elsewhere (I am going to try the TECH10's or the SIDI Crossfire 3's next, once I heal fully).
I broke 7 buckles in the space of a year owning these. I ride single track and the occasional MX track. Lack durability to say the least. They run very small. I am a 9.5 shoe size with a very skinny foot and the 10's boot my foot to sleep. If you have a wide foot, could be even more uncomfortable. I switched to Tech 7's and have not broken a buckle this season.
Great boot for the price. (I bought them on closeout)
Like most Fox gear, get one size larger and you should have no problem with fit. I really enjoy how much I can feel exactly where my foot is on the pegs. The ankle protection is a very nice piece of mind for me. The latch system is great, although after a moto or two you'll need to brush the dirt out and give the lower ones a little oil. Over all I would definitely recommend. I can't really comment on durability yet, I have about 3hrs on them and the soles don't show any wear.
Wow, I am so happy I have chosen to purchase these boots. 1 being that they are so comfortable right out of the box. Their will be hardly any break-in time required with these. The style is freaking awesome. I am a plane colored type of guy and I chose the Light Grey version. Couldn't be happier! HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Dont give me wrong, The boot is great. I bit cheaper than the competition. I have used them for almost 2 months, and the whole boot is crumbling in pieces, not sure how long will it last. Its a great boot for the short run.
I love Fox Instincts for the simple fact of how comfortable they are. They feel like sneakers on your feet and you can run with these boots out of the box. Feel at the shifter and brake pedal are excellent. Buckle system is good; Sidi and Gaerne buckles are better, but no issues with these and each pair comes with spares. Just check buckle clasp mounting screws every once in a while as they might loosen up over time.
Top of the line boot. No break in needed. Light weight and very comfortable. This is the 2nd pair I've owned. The 1st pair are 4 years old and the soles are still in decent shape.I am a 260 lb Vet rider. I just wanted something fresh and new looking. As with the 1st pair these boots run 1 full size small !!
I bought the first gen instincts in 2013 when their sizing was a little off so I had those in 11. Have loved them since I bought them so since it was time for new boots, went with the same Instinct but excited to try these new Generation with the nice new interior and slightly slimmer ankle.
Since they corrected the size, I went with a 10 and it was tricky. 11 I have too much room and although the 10 is tight out of the box, I have been wearing them around the house and it is breaking in slowly, 10 is the correct size. In shoes I wear a 9.5 nike and vans. I love all the brands of boots but I just can't ignore my love of the duratac bottom flat profile and light nature of the instinct. They might not last forever but I just love them.
Tip! The light grey color is awesome but it is not really a grey! It is like a super light blue mixed with purple and grey. Pictures just don't capture it very well but is neato! My hope is they fare better to mud than a plain white. Thanks to Chase for answering my youtube questions, always a happy RM customer.
I purchased these on clearance. The fit is excellent and they did not need to be broken in at all. Full day of trails in the heat and no sore spots on my feet or calves from the boots.
I was a little worried about comfort when I first tried them on, but they are really great once the short break in is over. Really comfortable and the best part is they are really light. The shin guard is really thick, so over the pant boots have to really be stretched on. The only thing I'm not wild about is the buckles, but its a minor gripe at this point. I've had alpinestar tech 8 and 10, gaerne sg 10, 11 and 12s. I think these are going to be my favorite boot from now on.
I've had Sidi Crossfire 3s and Gaerne SG12s as my most recent boots. The feel of the Instincts is phenomenal compared to the other 2. Putting them on is a breeze and bike grip is excellent. I think the other 2 probably provide better protection but you loose the feel. To me the Instincts provide a perfect balance.
I read the reviews and some said to get one size larger while others said they ordered their normal size; it was a coin toss. Fortunately Rocky Mountain knows how to do customer service and the turn around time for the larger size was quick, thanks so much RM. Out of the box the bigger size feels pretty good, a bit stiff but they are brand new. I normally wear Tech 7s and am used to a comfortable fit; still have them and still love them. The Instincts do pivot at the ankle enough to indicate they will be comfortable when I begin using them and should flex when I need them to. I really like the look of these Instincts. I like the buckles which are easier to operate than the Tech 7s, and that there is no velcro which can make the boot close together a little off which makes the buckles not line up correctly. The boot flap can move a little allowing the buckles to shift where they need to and line up properly. The soles and side panel rubber seems quite rugged and should take a lot of abuse. They were on clearance so I got a discount but they are still a bit spendy. They also came with 2 replacement buckles. Overall I really like them out of the box and look forward to breaking them in.
I recommend these boots for sure they are very comfortable and protect well a little pricey buy very good boot this is my third pair and I’m still very happy
This is my 2nd pair of Instincts and love them! These are the most comfortable pair of boots out of the box. They run small so get 1 size bigger than the tennis shoe you wear. Overall these are a great boot, especially when you get them on sale!
If you have an athletic, slightly narrow with arch foot, you will be so happy with these boots. Wtr is great compared to others, protection is good, may not be great in rocky terrain. You get what you pay for and these are not cheap.
Really comfortable and the side material grips the bike really well. The toe area is narrow on the outside of the boot which I noticed right away bec it made shifting gears effortless. I have wider feet and Sidis wouldn’t fit even with one size up bec the side of my feet would hurt. These Instincts fit really well though.
These boots are awesome could not ask for a more comfortable boot, I ordered a size larger but could probably wear an 11. I have the Mobius knee braces and they fit perfect in these boots. Highly recommend these.
I love these boots. They are extremely comfortable and have loads of support. They have lots of protection and they were good to use straight away with no need to break them in. They look good and I’ve had the same pair for a few years and they are not falling apart in any way. The duratac material used on the boots is very grippy (unless your foot pegs aren’t very sharp and your soles are wet. ( then it’s very slippery)). It is durable also but not as durable as I would’ve liked. I’ve had these boots for about 3 years and the soles are very worn but not worn through. They don’t need to have the soles replaced yet but I’ve had more durable soles in the past. All in all Im extremely impressed with these boots and I highly recommend them to anyone.

I’m a size 10.5 in shoes should I go with 10 boot and just break them in or get an 11?

BEST ANSWER:I typically wear a size 11 and I went with size 12 on the Instinct boot. I have wide feet and it was still snug but good. I'd recommend going with a 10.5 or 11 especially if you have wide feet. Other reviews indicated that the Instinct boots run small so I'm not the only one. Hope that helps.

Would recommend the 11. I’m an 11.5 in shoes, and went size 12. Fit nice and snug, but not tight. I don’t think I could pull an 11 off, I have normal feet, not wide.
Hello I was wondering, I generally wear a size 12 in shoes and boots, when I bought my comps 5s a while back I bought size 12 they felt snug and with my current tech 7s there a little roomy, just wondering how well these fit and if there true to size? Thanks
BEST ANSWER:My old tech 6 where also too roomy at size 12 but the instincts fit really well at size 12 for me. I think instincts just have more padding and are far more comfy. I also tried on instincts in 11 but they where too snug and bugging me. I do have a wider foot though. I normally wear a size 12 skate shoe like the fat DVS ones and a size 11-11.5 for fancier shoes like Hugo Boss or Diesel. Maybe you can get thinner/thicker socks to fine tune the fit.

I generally wear a size 11 in shoes but have wide feet, the 12 barely fit. Length is good. My guess is the 13 would fit you but if you have narrow feet a 12 might work. Rocky is good about exchanging them if they don't fit. I've also read that others say the Instinct boot is not true to size and is a little small. A size up is recommended. Good luck! Nice boot overall, I hope they last a long time.
Earlier Instincts were a little off on sizing. I’m a 11.5 and would have go to size 13. However, with the current Instincts 2016+ models, the size 12 fit great for me and have a bit of room and I can still wear thick Fox socks. I feel like the 12 is true to size for your size 12 foot
I also wear a size 12 and the comp 5s I used to own fit good on me after break in. These boots also require break in and they’ll fit good. They are extremely stiff compared to the comp 5 due to these boots being more protective but I after just 1 ride I liked how they felt
Hey Nick, I wear size 11 and absolutely love the boots. I bought a size 11 and can't remember if they have half sizes, however I would do a 11 1/2 if I had to do it over. Little snug but bearable, Hoping they break in a little. Nothing better than riding Mike
Im a size 10 in nikes and adidas, ordered size 10 and they fit perfect. Great boots. Only thing i would suggest is to keep and eye on the screws from time to time. They have a tendency to come loose after riding hard. Fox replaced for free by the way.
The instincts I find to be more true to the size. I wear size ten and went with that every time and they fit great. Instincts are the best boot I’ve ever owned
BEST ANSWER:Fox Instinct Boots are durable through wet and sloppy trails. You will want to prevent water from entering at the top cuff of the boot because it will cause them to get wet in the inside. Wearing the correct riding pants with your boots will help deter water damage. I would also recommend the Instinct Offroad boot. The Instinct Offroad is weather proof and was designed for wet rock, steep hill, and exceptional traction for these types of obstacles.

I would say as long as your not standing in knee deep water or standing in puddles you should be good. I pressure wash mine after every time I ride and I haven't had any problems but Im always on a track. But if you get these you won't be disappointed very comfortable.
