This skid plate looks great and I'm sure it'll take a beating! I would recommend partially installing one upper bolt and then doing the two lower bolts, should save you some time. I bought a low profile drain plug but it seems with the latest skid plate I might not even need it.

Great, once you get it on
Wrestled with it for 6 hours and could only get 3 of the 4 bolts on. Returned it and RM ATV/MC sent me a new one. The new one lined up great, and I had it on in 15 minutes. Like I said, once it’s on it’s great, and according to the reviews the vast majority go on easy or with a bit of wrestling. On the other hand, you will find the occaionall review that tells of all kinds of terrible trials and tribulations while installing this plate. Once again, I’m very glad I went through Rocky Mountain ATV/MC because they replaced my plate with no grief whatsoever.

Installation was very easy the mounting holes lined up perfect. The quality of workmenship was great. I had it powder coated black to match the rest of the bike. Looks like it was factory installed.

    Could be better
I have gone with sw motech crash bars and rear master cylinder cover and love them. The finish matches the frame perfectly. This skid plate getting on is horrible, only three of the four screws line up and the fourth is so far away. Was going to return after fighting with it and then watched some videos on this skid plate. It seems this is an issue because there are many videos. The best video used a floor jack and that was close. I finally got mine on with a ratchet strap and I made all the holes one size bigger. Looks great now that it's on and matches the rest of bike. Rocky Mountain ATV/MC is awesome and there delivery times are incredible

Great skid plate but fitment takes some work.
I recently bought a 2017 klr 650 and have been steadily doing mods. Everything has been easy so far except this skid plate. For as much as you have to pay for this thing and with SW MOTECH supposedly being a good brand it’s not a direct bolt in replacement for the stock plastic plate. Luckily I’m a mechanic for a living so I was able to figure it out quickly on what needed to be done. I went on forums first before I figured it out and a lot of people were having the same problem. They even returned theirs for another one and still had the problems. From what I read no one had figured out exactly what to do to get it to fit. Some people enlarged the holes in the skid plate but you don’t have to do that. After looking at the original plastic piece and the new one side by side you can see the front to holes/ mounting locations are at a different angle than the stock plastic plate. To remedy this you need to bend the two brackets at the front that the plate mounts to. I did this with a rubber mallet. Just knock them to the rear a bit to get close to the same angle of the SW MOTECH skid plate. Then the holes go from being about 3/8”-1/2” off to about 1/16”-1/8” off. From that point you just have to muscle the skid plate up or over by hand to get the bolts started. The first one will be easy but the last one will be a little harder but you can do it with persistence. Start the install after bending the two front brackets by installing the two underbelly bolts with spacers loosely then move to the front two as explained before. I hope this helps someone else. This is the new style skid plate for the klr. I noticed some of the positive reviews were on the older plate. GOOD LUCK!??

Overall it is a very well built skid plate. Installation was a pain due to hole spacing being a little off. Have also developed a rattle at 3500 rpm due to skid touching frame in the rear, will do some adjustments to try and remedy.

SW Motech - Great design, strength
Fits like a glove - very thick, will do well in rock hits and tree crossing in the Colorado Rockies trails for sure. Couldn't have been easier to mount - directions clear, took me longer to read the directions than to mount it. Definitely get some grip lock on the bolts for added protection against vibration.

Pain to install, but great skid plate
The quality of this plate is great for trail riding on a KLR, but it is a major pain to install. The bottom 2 bolt holes line up perfect (spacers are a pain to get on the bolt when installing though). The big problem are the front/top bolt holes... they are a full 1/4 inch off. To get them aligned you can either use a bottle jack and crowbar to force them in alignment or you can grind the holes a little wider and use larger washers. Both are poor options. It is sad that such a good skidplate has this issue. I would go with a different brand if I were to get another one.

Will this skid plate work the Tusk crash bars on a Kawasaki KLR 650?
    Justin H on Aug 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this SW-Motech skid plate will work with the Tusk Crash Bars - Engine Guards.
Has the spacing issue been addressed in 2018? between reviews and forums there is consistently a mention that top mounting holes are off. Seems to not be a deal breaker but i am not a mechanic and want to learn repair/upgrades on a KLR650.
    Zachary B on Dec 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have a 2012 and once I got it on, I love it. That being said, I absolutely could not get the first one on. I had heard that some fit perfect and some didn’t, so I tried again. RM was great; i returned it, and they sent me another. The second one went on fairly easily. My brother was over, so I did have an extra set of hands. But with minimal wrestling we got the holes lined up and had it mounted in about 20 minutes.
I see that others have said that this works with the SW-Motech crash bars, But I noticed that they both are Gen 2's. I believe the crash bars are different across the generations.
Is this plate compatible with a Gen 1 (2002) and the SW-Motech crash bars?
