The Instinct Boot is the premiem, pro-level offering in the Fox lineup of motocross boots and has some of the best protection, comfort, and mobility of any boot currently offered. It's one of our favorite boots in its premium price tier, and the boot is good enough that it's worn by pro racers Ken Roczen and Ryan Dungey.
Key to the Instinct's performance is the amount of specialized tech worked into the boot, a level that's hard to in other boots. It begins at the base of the boot with a steel-shanked, new-style bonded sole made from Fox’s Duratac, a rubber-type material designed to be incredibly durable and incredibly tacky for extended wear on the pegs and great control when you sqeeze the bike with your legs. Duratac is found extending up the inner-calf side of the boot as well, creating a large gripping surface and a very large patch of heat protection.
The rest of the boot is covered in large layouts of stiff, durable TPU panels that form shin and ankle impact protection. The ankle gets more support from a reinforced heel cup at the rear which doubles as a hyperextension stop for the biomechanical hinge system. The dual hinge system gives you a biomechanical hinge on either side of the boot, and when the hinges rotate, the supportive strut or spine on the rear of the boot flexes to absorb excess energy.
The hinge and support strut system results in excellent hyperextension and hyperflexion protection, as well as a large degree of movement and flexibility. The result is great injury protection, range of motion, and a boot with an exceptionally small break-in period.
Comfort is increased by the mesh and microfiber inner materials and a multi-density insole that many riders say has a very comfortable, sneaker-like feel. More comfort comes from the unique set of self-cleaning, very easy to use buckles that firmly lever shut and mimic a ball and socket joint at their closure point. At the tip of the buckle is a small cup, and when closed this cup latches onto a small ball on the body of the boot. When latched, each buckle's ball and socket joint are free to pivot and self adjust as your foot flexes and extends, putting less stress on the buckles themselves and keeping your foot comfortable and free of pinch/pressure points.
