Okay Chest Protector, not as good as Fox Titan and More Money, also Needs Modification
I used a Fox Titan sport jacket/ballistic jersey for years and still have it. Hands down it is better quality, more heavy duty than the Leatt 5.5 and for less money. The reason I bought the Leatt is because I broke a rib in 2019 and this one has side protection. I read all the reviews which most complained about quality, and ordered it online anyway. When I received it, I saw what they meant. It still is a useable jacket/protector.

The biggest difference you notice right off is the mesh is lightweight compared to the Fox, more of a jersey than a jacket. It does stretch quite a bit, and seems like less of a protection and more just to position the armor on your body. As others have said, the mesh and zipper that zips up the side feel like they won't last long. Nobody seems to like the sleeves that unzip right at the elbow, sometimes when you don't want them to. I have found that if I'm careful putting it on, they stay zipped while I'm riding.

After wearing it on 8-10 rides, my biggest complaint was the kidney belt barely will stay fastened. Often you can feel it popping loose, which makes it kind of worthless. This is because the Velcro fastener has a very small surface area, also it is an inferior type of Velcro with very little holding power. I wrote to Leatt and they said they would consider doing something about it, but after several months gave up. So I decided to do something about it.

I bought 2 inch wide industrial strength Velcro, which you can get at places like Lowes for $3-10, depending on the length. The plastic hook side of the Velcro, which is about 1.75 inches wide, seems identical to the industrial Velcro, so I left that as is and added another 2 inch wide band. The loop side (the fuzzy component) of the belt, which is some kind of fabric, as I said is not adequate, so I covered that with two 2 inch wide bands, for a total of 4 inches of hook and loop material on each side of the belt. You peel the backing of the Velcro and stick it on. I pressed it very hard over the entire surface to bed it into the fabric and so far it seems to be holding just fine. If I have problems later on with it coming unstuck, I will take it to a leather shop and have them sew it on, or try using heavy duty fabric cement. But so far it is working great and may outlast the rest off the jersey.

Worth the Price
After puncturing a lung with a rooster guard on and having a chest tube put in while I was awake...WOW...OOUCCHH..lol I decided I was going to research and buy the best protection while I was recovering.

Lots of padding and protection, very comfortable, and tons of places to adjust it to make it fit properly. I will feel much better about riding with this on.

What is up with the fragile mesh that Leatt decided to use. I know they want to keep it cool but you have to make it more durable and as others have stated why skimp on the zipper.

I bought my son one also and I will not let him put it on unless I am there and helping him because I am afraid he will accidentally tear up the zipper.

Comfy and safe, but not super durable.
I was skeptical of riding with so much protective gear on, but it's really not that bad. It can certainly get hot, but I ride around Colorado so it's not usually too bad -- somebody in humid heat may feel differently. After being off the bike for 9 of 12 months from back-to-back injuries though, I figured I could use some extra protection.

This suit offers a ton of protection and is surprisingly comfortable given the amount of protection. However, while the protective parts of the suit seem really durable, the fabric/zipper parts of it are pretty bad. There are a number of velco straps on this thing, and the mesh fabric that holds it all together sticks to the velcro, but not only that when it sticks to the velco and you pull it apart it tends to damage the fabric. Similarly, the zipper is quite small and it has popped open on me a few times. You really, really need to make sure to store this thing properly -- if you just throw it in your bad with the velcro undone, the straps will end up sticking to the fabric and you'll nearly destroy it when you pull it apart.

In the end I love the fit and protection of this, but find it ironic that a little bit of velcro and a cheap zipper is going to eventually be its demise.

Good protection....But...
This gives you very good protection, but the sizing is off, I ordered the large, because I am 5'10", 180#, so it should fit well, but it is very tight in my arms. However, I do not want it loose because it should fit snugly to protect you. It is almost cutting off my arm cerculation. Also, the arm sleaves need to be one piece, with no zipper. Thjis makes it difficult to put on, and take off.

Poor poor quality
Purchased because it seemed to offer a high level of protection and also covered the lower ribs (which is rare). Unfortunately like most of my other Leatt purchases the construction and quality is sub-par, especially considering the price.
The mesh fabric of which all the armor is loosely sewn to rips very easily. Mine ripped in several places just from putting it in/taking it off. If you wear this without a jersey it’ll likely get snag and something quickly and rip extensively.
The zipper is awkward and too tight putting undo strain on the already weak stitching in the area when zipping up.
Finally, as mentioned before, the stitching attaching the armor to the mesh is as weak/weaker than the fabric it attaches to. My left shoulder pad completely ripped off and now must be affixed with zip-ties.
Maybe a seamstress can fix this but most likely they’ll turn the job away as there’s no suitable fabric to attach to.

Do your research from actual buyers
I ignored all the negative reviews about low quality fabric and zippers. They are correct. I can't believe anyone would wear this more than once, Just getting it on is a mission. The zipper goes from armpit to hip bone , not up the center. The elbow pads attach around the arm with a cheap thin zipper and make it difficult to even put on. There isn't enough adjustment in the kidney belt to get it tight enough to be effective. ZERO lower back protection. HOT! I don't think this is made to be worn above 60 degrees. This item may get high safety marks , but riding with a flak jacket would be far more comfortable and cooler (And lighter). Definitely returning this. Fox titan jacket is sadly higher quality and more comfortable with better lower back protection .

Almost, but..returned for the Leatt 5.5 Chest Protector
Would be 5 stars all the way, but I dont like the zipper and it was too tight. I'm 5'11, 210 lbs, and workout, wear XL t shirts, and 44 L in dress jacket. I ordered the largest size, and it was almost impossible to take off because of the inside nylon shirt to fit if, pulling back over your head, and without tearing the sleeve attachment and zipper. My riding buddy has this and the zippers are destroyed, one stuck in place, and the other won't re zip, hanging on with safety pin. Really??? The zippers in the arm That attach the sleeve are the same as a zipper in a pair of shorts from my local store, not fit for this protector. So I returned and got the Leatt 5.5 Chest Protector, its the same protection, easier to adjust since no sleeve zipper, can be worn above or below jersey, easier to adjust, and has the rib protection still. I just have to stitch the shoulder protectors in place which is a common problem on that model, (took 5 minutes). love the 5.5 in the chest protector version. More adjustments, easy to place on and great protection.

Nice design, pads stay in place, comfortable but I think zipper will be an issue
Used for first time this weekend. I'd give it a 5 star rating if the would have put a better quality stronger zipper. First time I put it on I guess I did not seat the start of zipper well and it split open from the bottom. So I had to take it off and clear the zipper backwards yanking. Secondly, I had earlier put a small piece of Velcro at the top of zipper to keep it from opening up. If you pull any pressure around the neck area the zipper will unzip quickly as this is a compression top. We will see how well the zipper lasts. Also when I was pulling it off, my finger made a hole in the fabric at the end of sleeve. Pulled if off the wrong technique. Otherwise it is surprisingly cool when you get a little airflow. No jersey required on warm days. Plus all the pads stay in place.

Leatt 5.5 Body Protection
While this offers a lot of body protection its very cumbersome and bulky and not easy to put on you really need another person to help you put it on. I prefer the leatt 3DF air fit body protection as its easier to put and not as bulky.

Is this a unisex item?
A shopper on Jul 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I do not recommend this product. The zipper location and method for putting on is horrible. If you are looking for body armor, get the fox titan. I have had that for 2 years and beat it to death. I wash it in my laundry machine. If you need a neck brace, get the leatt 3df air fit. That is the only system that works well for me. However, I have very skiny arms, and even that is tight on me. my hands go numb. good luck shopping. Just buy something and try it on and send it back if id does not fit you. But, keep in mind that I did not like this products at all. set your expectations for weirdness.
Just received mine today. The rear has a removable foam pad on the outside pocket. Looks like the front upper pocket should have one also? Mine doesn’t, just wondered if it’s missing. Lol

BEST ANSWER: Hello, the front pocket does not come with a removable pad. Thanks.
