Great full protection
I sold my Thor mesh shirt version for this. After falling with my rib cage on a tree stump, I really appreciate the rib protectors. Shoulder pads work great as well. I wear it on the outside of my Jersey, which looks just fine. The venting is quite nice if you can keep your speed up. I can imagine anywhere out west it would be fabulous. Much of my riding is in the deep, humid woods of MN. 2nd gear will be the first gear worn out on my Bike!

When we were looking at these he wanted some thin flimsy one and I wouldn’t buy it or let him ride. He wears it all the time and love the back/kidney support. Fit perfect and easy to clean.

Fits my 6ft 240lb XXL chest and 40 inch waist great!
I purchased this after a nasty hit while racing and have been very happy with the comfort and protection this setup offers.

I am 6ft 240 with a 40 inch waist. ( 225lbs when at race weight, and 38 waist) I race quads and was concerned this would ride up like many others did and make me not like wearing it. Very happy to report that this stays in place even when at 240lbs, is super comfy, provides me with confidence and added support. This item is a game changer. I wear this is conjunction with an EVS IMPACT belt to provide maximum protection. No chafing, no discomfort, held up great for 6 rds of woods racing so far. I dont wear the shoulder pads ever.

Added bonus, my hydration pack is not noticeable when riding now.!!!

Good and Bad, Sizing charts off.
First impressions:

The construction is very sturdy, even more so than what I expected from a chest protector. I like the wrap around protection for the ribs. It doesn't fit very well on me and needs more adjustability. It leaves large gaps between my body and the protector. I'd like it to be more snug. I want it to work because the construction looks good. It's awkward to don and doff due to all the floppy parts.

The Bad:

The sizing provided by Leatt and Rocky Mountain is conflicting. The product manual from Leatt states "Adult 120-210 lbs." and "XXL 210-286 lbs." A more accurate way to determine proper size would be chest and waist circumference as opposed to body weight.

There isn't enough adjustment in the shoulders. The entire protector slides up and down my chest and back when I move.

I'm 6'2" 195lbs athletic build, and the XXL is way too big. Even cinched down to the smallest settings it's incredibly loose on me and doesn't sit straight.

I really wanted shoulder protection, but the shoulder protectors are so loose and floppy and difficult to manage when donning the kit and caboodle I'm about ready to tear them off out of frustration.

The Good:

It feels sturdy and safe. Construction is much sturdier than I anticipated. The foam is dense and the plastic pieces solid and well bonded to each other. I would feel very safe from roost and impacts (assuming I had a proper fitting protector)

The chest protector is much larger than what appeared on the website, offering more area of protection. This is a big plus.

The shoulder protectors themselves are constructed very solid and I feel would survive an impact to the shoulder. (Discounting how annoyingly loosely they are attached)

I like it has the ability to accomidate a neck brace.

Conclusion:

Because I will be exchanging this "XXL" for an "Adult" size, this review is limited to my first impression of the product and will be updated once I receive the proper size protector.
I am disappointed a more precise sizing method is not used for this product. It would save a lot of shipping time and frustration.

Awesome Off-road Protection
This chest protector is hefty. You can feel how much protection it will offer just by the weight alone. Its not overly heavy but, you can tell a big difference in the quality of this compared to a sub $100 roost deflector. The shoulder pads are a nice add as well. Fits true to size I would recommend for someone who is doing offroad trails and enduro.

Great roost protector
Use this for single track in the mountains and I fall on the rocks from time to time. This thing will keep your back and ribs well protected.

These are really good for doing hare scramble stuff where we do down a fair amount. On the warm days your going to sweat a ton, but you get use to it and the protection is far better then the ones with just front and back panels, no sides or shoulders.

Hot, not good value, protective
Raced in dry 80 degree weather with this thing and the front and back panels feels really hot against my skin. I feel like I would need to modify/port the back panel to wear this comfortably in the summer.
There are some breathing holes in the multi-layer back panel, but none of them line up with one another, and none of them are really able to vent hot air from under the back panel.
There is some coverage but no real protection on the top of the shoulder.
The Velcro on the arm straps is not in the right position for the arm straps to provide tension on my arms. I will need to tape them in place.
When you pay a lot, you expect a lot. This four star product, that looses a star for it's poor finish and fit, given the price.

Excellent protection
I am 6'2" and about 220lbs. I got the large size and it fits very well. Along with many of the other reviewers, I have removed the shoulder pads since they don't stay in place and they don't have a great mount to the frame. The spine, chest, and rib protection is excellent. It earned it's worth the last time I was out when I went up and over the bike..and then the bike went up and over me. With a pack on as well, if I hadn't been wearing this I know that I would not have been able to continue riding that day. I highly recommend this piece of protection.

Pricey but very well built!
This is by far the best chest protector I’ve owned. I’ve been looking for a good guard with shoulder protection, and this thing gets it done. On the first trip out, I had the same issues that a lot of the other reviews said... the straps that hold the shoulder guards in place get loose and they fall down. Some reviews said the shoulder guards fell down altogether, but mine only loosened to the point where they were riding too far down my arm. Although I think this could be designed better to prevent them from loosening, I also think that the design for attaching the shoulder pieces is much more robust than most other guards that rip or tear off after a couple rides. When I got back home, I just put the straps in a place that fit well, then my wife stitched it together to keep it from moving. No more issues, and easy to pull the stitching out if I ever want to take the shoulder guards off. Second, I struggled with sizing for this, since I fall between the large and XXL on the sizing chart. I’m 190 lbs and 6’-1”, and ended up going with the regular adult size. There’s lots of adjustability, and it fits great. It’s certianlg not the cheapest option, but overall I’m very happy with this purchase and the quality of the guard. Would definitely recommend to a friend!

Does this work well with leatt GPX 5.5 2016 neck brace?
SCOTT P on Jul 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. My boys and I all use these roost protectors and the GPX 5.5 (2016) neck braces. They integrate right into the roost protector by sliding into the front and rear of it. They also have a couple of rubber/elastic straps that hold the neck brace down (called "BraceOn").

From what Leatte told me, if you wear it on the roost protector (as described above) as opposed to under it, you measure your chest size for the neck brace with the chest protector on.

This roost protector just saved my ribs last week when my bars hit a tree and swung around and hit my ribs. Didn't feel a thing. I am happy with the combination.
Have they done anything to fix the shoulder guards that a number of people are complaining about?
Scott H on Sep 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have the version sold in late 2018, and the shoulder pad adjustment straps would loosen almost immediately. I fixed this problem with two stainless steel 1" flat slides purchased from Strapworks. Remove each shoulder pad, thread the strap through the flat slide, then through the plastic adjuster on the 5.5 Pro HD, then back through the flat slide. Problem solved.
One size fits all. How well is that commenced? I'm 5' 6 1/2" and stumble in at 170 ish fully geared and in shape. Don't want to buy something that will not fit snug.
SCOTT P on Jul 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi Scott, the 5.5 Pro HD comes in two sizes - Adult and XXL. For your size you fall in perfect for the Adult size (150-198lbs). There is adjustment for the flank pieces that you can move in and out to get a more tailored fit to your body, as well as strap adjustment around your bicep to snug up around your arms if you are running the shoulder pieces.
Wondering if it would be possible to wear this 5.5 Pro HD protector UNDER jersey WITH a neck brace? If so, how would you secure the neck brace to the 5.5 with it under jersey ? I really want something with this level of protection that can be worn UNDER my jersey and still use a neck brace. I haven't found a lot of info on this topic. I wish RM would show this set up option in the video if it's possible.
Gregory D on Aug 15, 2018
BEST ANSWER: If you wear it under the jersey you do not secure it to the protector. Instead, you remove the panel on the back that the rear neck fingers usually slide into. The brace then floats on top of the protector and jersey. You should secure the neck brace with the straps just like you would when were not wearing a protector.

Note, I purchased the 5.5 Pro and ended up returning/exchanging it for the 4.5 Pro. There was so much protection that with the 5.5 Pro protector and a Leatt 4.5 neck brace that I could not safely maneuver around on the bike. Take advantage of RMC's return policy and try the 5.5 to see if it works for you the way you want it to. If it doesn't do, what I did and step down to the 4.5.
I’m 6’3 195lb. Should I get adult size or larger size? Is the larger size actually longer, providing more coverage or is it just larger to fit a wider body type? I want maximum coverage front and back.
ERIC S on Jan 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I’m 6’2” and 210lbs. I got the larger size and it fits great. Excellent coverage front and back, and not so long in the front that it was restricting or uncomfortable while sitting. The shoulders pads were a little loose, but I had planned on removing them anyways.
