When one of the best gets better, you'll ride with more confidence - rain or shine, hot or cold, city or highway. With its new XST Evo sipes, which widen as the tire wears, MICHELIN Road 5 tires offer effective water evacuation throughout the life of the tire. The new compounds are specially formulated to provide excellent grip on a wide range of road surfaces, including painted lines and pedestrian crossings, making it easier for you to ride with confidence in virtually all conditions.
    • A USED Road 5 tire with more than 3,000 miles of wear stops as short as a BRAND NEW Pilot Road 4 tire on a water soaked road thanks to the revolutionary patented MICHELIN XST Evo water drop sipes, which grow wider mile after mile.
      - Based on internal wet braking testing comparing new MICHELIN® Pilot® Road 4 tires and worn (3,502 miles) MICHELIN Road 5 tires in tire sizes 120/70 ZR 17 (front) and 180/55 ZR17 (rear) on a 2013 Suzuki® Bandit 1250S, conducted in 2016 in Ladoux, France. Actual results may vary.
    • Improved dry grip, stability and handling compared to MICHELIN Pilot Road 4 tires thanks to Michelin’s patented ACT+ casing technology and the 2CT+ dual compound technology.

    TERRIBLE WEAR CHARACTERISTICS
Very disappointed. I'm a big fan of Michelin tires, and rarely use another brand. The Pilot Road 4's are my all time favorite for my two bikes that use this size. The PR4s gave excellent grip, excellent handling, and averaged 10,300 miles on my heavy and powerful FJR1300. Naturally, they last even longer on the FZ-07. But my first set of Road 5s disappointed. They gave good grip and handling, but not quite as good as the PR4s. The tread life, however, was poor. The rear Road 5 wore out on the left side long before the right side, at 7,200 miles. (I don't see how to add a photo here.) The front Road 5 is worn out at the edge or shoulder, with good tread left on the sides and in the center, at just 6,500 miles. Granted, the Road 5s are lighter and cheaper, but that's not what I look for in a tire. I want performance and long life, at least relatively for a sport touring tire.
Why oh why have the Pilot Road 4s disappeared? If I can't find those, my 2nd choice is the Dunlop Roadsmart III.

Less mileage, but I didn't check the load rating
Title says it. I didn't check the load rating as every other tire that I've bought up in load rating has increased my tire mileage. Last season I slipped once on my Pilot Road 4 GT's, so I thought I'd try the new Pilot Road 5. I didn't ride the same place as where I slipped with the GT's, but did ride in several heavy rain days as I have with the GT's. I can find no fault with the 5's save for the 10k miles that I got with it-rear tire. With that information I won't try the 5 front tire as it will probably get less mileage too(more void, less rubber tread on the road). I'll go back to the Pilot Road 4 GT and stay with my Pilot Road 4 Trail for the front, that get me 11-12k each. 2014 Super Tenere, 340 lbs for me less luggage.

Great life and handling on Sport Touring VFR800
I have been running Michelin for awhile now so I can't compare much to other tires but there's a reason I keep coming back to these. They fit my needs perfectly since I use my VFR800 for daily commuting during the week and fairly hard mountain riding on the weekends. I have been consistently impressed with these tires for handling the long highway miles as well as hard cornering. I have 10,000 miles on this rear tire as of this review and the attached tread pictures - pretty incredible mileage from a sporty tire (For reference, my pilot power tire lasted about 6k with this type of riding). This is over the course of 1 year. I ordered a new one but I'm still going to run these awhile longer.

I have pushed these tires hard in the twisties chasing down "real" sport bikes and they handle it great - I've only gotten them to get loose around some rough switchbacks and hard braking but they go right back to staying planted. (I say them because I also have the Road 5 front.) I am lucky enough to live by some amazing roads where I can really push the bike and these tires are definitely up to the challenge.

I don't push their limits in the wet but I've never had issues with them when commuting in the rain at highway speeds.

Overall these are great all around tires that definitely hold their own during hard riding and have impressive tread life. I don't think I'll run anything else on my VFR.

    Replacement
I am unable to give any useful info for tire life as this tire is replacing a low mileage PR5 that had a puncture I was unable to repair. No issues with wet weather usage or dry grip. I was extremely pleased with how quickly I received this tire.

Wife says they're great on her BMW R1200R
Prior to these, she had been using Michelin Pilot Road 4's since they introduced tham, and before that PR2's. I didn't like the PR3's on my BMW K1200GT - felt like riding on sand when on the edge of the tread (PR3's), so never bought those for the wife's bikes. We went from PR2 to PR4 and have been very happy with them and now the PR5's are great too. While I am a Michelin fan-boy (bikes and cars and trucks), on the BMW R1200GS, I use Metzler 'Tourance' (not the "NEXT" version - those suck).

By advice of some in the know running a slightly smaller diameter tire in front. Nice new sticky compound for us mortals.
