Details

Michelin StarCross 5 Sand Tire is a hybrid design that’s purpose built for loose terrain and sandy track conditions.

Developed by engineers and riders over several years, the hybrid design incorporates large center lugs that provide the traction of a paddle tire, and an aggressive layout of side lugs for the cornering ability of a traditional soft terrain tire.

On the front tire a more traditional design is made of tall, aggressive lugs so you can get a planted feel and stay on the line you want without the front of your bike jumping around.

Because of the specialized tread and the high-density casing that reduces weight by 15%, the StarCross 5 Sand Tire provides significant performance gains compared to other tire options.

    Specs:
  • Rear tire features a scooped center tread pattern that acts like a paddle to evacuate sand and deliver traction
  • Casing design incorporates stronger, higher density materials that reduce weight up to 15% without compromising strength or durability
  • The casing construction features Michelin’s Comfort Casing Technology (CCT), which provides exceptional shock absorption to reduce rider fatigue
  • Casing is engineered to optimize the tire’s contact patch which offers maximum levels of grip for precise steering and traction even in difficult conditions
  • Intermediate and side tread blocks ensure good steering response from the front tire and traction from the rear
  • Central blocks are designed specifically to enhance braking performance and traction on all riding surfaces.
  • Self-cleaning tread design includes fine horizontal tread lines to release soil and enhance traction in a range of different soil conditions.

Michelin StarCross 5 review
Excellent tire for sand tracks, I run 13.5 psi in deep NC sand with great results. Tire lasted 30+/- hours before side knobby's started to fly-off because of hard packed section at South Fork. Overall an excellent tire for loose soil.

Sand+
Riding in NM where we have lots of deep sand and some pretty big dunes but also general desert conditions. This is a step above knobbies on steep sand climbs but also anywhere with loose rocks. Cornering traction isn't bad either. Cleared itself pretty well in wet sand-mud. Knob corners are getting a little softer after a couple rides so hardpack and slickrock are to be avoided as you would expect - it would work fine but wear fast. Wouldn't mind if it were a bit cheaper, but Michelins are never the cheapest, if the rubber is good and doesn't chunk I'll be happy.

Best sand Tire
I bought this tire for my trip out to Sand Hollow, which has everything from rocks to dunes. Not only does this tire look good, but I was very impressed with the performance of it. I was able to to drive on the rocks, gravel, and sand all without any problem. I rode for probably 5 hours in all areas of Sand Hollow. When the day was done, no knobs were missing and i was left amazed and wanting more. This is the PERFECT for Sand Hollow and other areas like it.

A good tire for sand or muddy conditions
It does really good in muddy conditions. I ran it in a hare scramble. Did Awsome in the muck when you where comming out of a corner. You could pin it and carry the front. Only problem I seen was I lost a couple side lugs. But for the abuse that was applied to the tire it did exceptionally well.

I'm Impressed
I don't write reviews really ever so the fact that I'm writing a review means this tire rocks!!!

First time riding in Sand here in WA at Moses Lake Sand Dunes. I had no problems hooking up and the stability while riding in the sand was perfect. I didn't put the front tire on as I already had a starcross tire that came with the bike. I was extremely happy with this tire. 4 days riding in the sand and there is zero wear on the tire, it looks brand new.

Ok so the sand it was great, but I'm lazy and didn't want to swap wheels back to the dirt tire that came with the bike, also a starcross. So I left it on the bike and took it trail riding here in WA at Capital Forest. If you have ever ridden here you'll know that there are a lot of rocks from don't hit them size to loose rock covering some corners. I had previously ridden here on the tire that came with the bike and it worked but it was a challenge as I was constantly loosing traction and sliding all over. With this tire I had zero problems riding in these conditions. This tire boosted my confidence level to where I was able to just rip through these trails. On the tight turns with loose rocks and a mix of bigger rocks this tire hooked up every time all the time. No sliding down the banks in the turn or into rivets in the trail. The traction on the side of the tire is a beautiful thing.

How does this tire hold up on hard surfaces?
Carson L on Jan 30, 2019
BEST ANSWER: We used this tire at sand hills in Colorado, which are surrounded by gravel roads. It seemed to hold up fine to hard dirt and gravel based on our experience.
Has anyone used Starcross 5 Sand tire in the Glamis sand dunes, compared to a regular paddle tire, how much better, thanks for any replies.?
James T on Feb 21, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The starcross 5 sand tire is a great tire for tracks like Southwick national in Massachusetts. But in the dunes a paddle tire May be a better option.
